references and academic papers

Hi - I am applying for a job at a universities - I have some academic papers from a good while ago which are not really relelvent for the role -different field should I list them or just say x published papers?
also just finishing a very short term job do they really want a reference from it - may be tricky to get --census collector

unlikely to care about reference from recent job.

I would list any published papers on your CV and mention them in the letter, it shows ability to publish even if they are in a different field. Also list conference presentations, invited seminars etc. For references I would go with academic references, e.g., past supervisor or tutor, senior academic who knows your work etc.
