I am currantly on ML and was meant to go to a KIT day last week, my DS was poorly the night before and we spent the night at the hospital, thankfully he was fine but i did not want to leave him with his GD the next day. I called my boss first thing and explained and they were quite off with me. i have spent the next few days quite upset about this and am worring about when i do go back, to the extent of IF i really want to go back there, it is quite a pressured job. If i decided not to go back would i have to pay back my SMP or do i have to go back for a certain amount of time? sorry for the ramble hope i make sense!

You would not have to pay back SMP, but if they have paid you an enhanced amount of maternity pay (i.e. above SMP) you might have to pay some or all of that back depending on your employer's policy.

That's right, you are not obliged to go back. You do need to give them your full contractual notice though, so if you maternity leave ran out before that did you might end up needing to go in for a bit.
