I am looking at ways of trying to earn money while working part-time/flexibly/evenings. Until recently I worked as a part-time research associate at a uni and also worked as a part-time teacher at the same uni. Sadly work there has completely dried up and our finances are v stretched so a friend suggested tutoring. I have 3 DC (6, 3 and 1 yo) and no child care now so looking at options that are quite restricted. There seems to be very little work of any sort locally (I'm in the sticks on the north coast of northern ireland) but there are quite a few local schools and the uni so tutoring may be an option. Anyone do it? How do you find it? How do you get info on syllabuses etc? (my background is in biology). Thanks for any advice.

Have you thought about looking whether The Open University has any vacancies in your area?

My DH is a tutor - he started putting ads up on noticeboards and in local papers, now all his work comes through word of mouth. Most people want lessons from 6pm onwards which works well for us as I'm home from work then. In the holidays though he can be busy all day so could you arrange childcare for then?

He started by getting text books out of the library, and I think found lots of the syllabus/exam stuff online.
