Paternity leave

Am hoping this is the right place to put this...

My husband was made redundant just before Christmas. He finally found and started a new job a month ago. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant.

When he applied for the job, he made clear that I was pregnant and asked about having time off when the baby was born. He was told this wouldn't be a problem and that they would be flexible.

His employer has now told him (a month after he started) that he isn't entitled to SPP. It appears they're right - It's not something we'd had to think about before. They have also told him they're not happy for him to take 2 weeks holiday, but might let him take a week "at a push" if they're quiet (which is unlikely this time of year.

Is there any other way he can take time off? It feels so unfair that he'll be lucky to have a week. This is my first child and I have no idea how I'll manage - What if I end up with a section?

I'm sure it sound like I'm whinging (I probably am - Am very hormonal lately!!) but I was really looking forward to having him there for a little while to help me :(

This might help:

My husband started a new job when I was 4 months pregnant, but they were great and gave him 1.5 weeks off. I never found out though (must ask tonight when he gets home) if it was unpaid leave or just time off.
