Issues at work with ...the new HR person

Have namechanged for this-

Background:

Have been working since 2009 for the European Branch of an american Global Software Vendor. We are a small but expending office of now about 20.

The Accounts/HR rep left last summer and it took them until early this year to find someone. They found someone and she has started earlier this month.

-On her first day, she complained about being bored and going home.
-On her 3rd day- she boasted about hers and her BF sex life and how they have illegal porn on their laptop (which to me rings alarm bells as that can only mean rape, murder or underage)

  • She is constantly bitching about one thing or else

Today, she, (this is an open office) openly taken the piss out made fun of a deaf person, loudly, I heard her and I was absolutely shocked by it. I was raised by 2 deaf parents and I found this profoundly upsetting and totally out of order. I talked about it with another colleague who equally found her behaviour intolerable and that we now feel that we can't go to this person with any issue because of her behaviour.

I want to have a chat with my Director about this because I will not tolerate having to work with such a person. I'm by far not an anal over PC person, have worked in IT with ''the boys'' for a while now and I won't get shocked easily. Right now, I don't even want to go back tomorrow, I don't want to be near a person like her.

She is obviously incompetent- Where do I stand ?

TIA

Wow. She sounds delightful.

As a manager I would expect anyone coming to me with something like this to come with an objective list of what has happened. So I would write down your concerns, objectively and with dates.

Explain to your manager that you have found her comments unprofessional and latterly offensive and it is begining to affect you in your daily work as it is causing an unpleasant atmosphere. If you can get your colleague to come with you, so your director is clear that its not personal, but a real problem, that would be even better.

Its then up to your manager to make sure that they manage the situation.

It sounds shitty. Hope it works out.

I agree entirely with Babyheave. DH runs a similar small company and he would be appalled if a staff member didn't come to him asap in that situtaiiton.

I'm wondering whether you should also be notifying the police abobut the illegal porn?

p.s. the great thing is that you've got this at the start, so if she can be let go without too much difficulty if she doesn't pull her socks up immediately.

She's clearly not a qualified HR person. Anyway, report to Director. Does she have contact with customers at all?

allisnotwellatwork · 23/03/2011 09:50

She does have contact with our customers because she has to chase the payables.

I just had a chat with my Director, who was very thankful I did. I told my colleagues who were upset by her behaviour to let him know too. He has told me to report any other similar issue as they arise.

He is speaking to her now.

Will keep you posted.

how did it go allisnotwell?

allisnotwellatwork · 24/03/2011 10:04

I'm not sure- 2 colleagues have also complained and she has been cautioned and told to stop.

I noticed she was a lot more quiet and subdued during the afternoon. I haven't heard a single word from her this morning.

I just got this feeling that she is experienced in Accounts but not realy HR-They needed someone to do both and sadly , she's not really HR material.

So, time will tell if she'll be around in 2 months time- it's up to her now.

Do you feel any better for having told your boss - especially since he has acted on it?
