Hello,

we have a new manager in our shop and she has decided that we will not be paid if we start work at 9.30 (keyholders, when we go in to get till) we will only be paid from 10am.

Cas she do this?

Thanks

Do you have to be at work at 9:30? I'd show up at 10 tbh. No idea if it's legal but if you aren't technically "on the clock" are you insired to be in the building?

girlylala0807 · 14/03/2011 13:00

We are on rota to start at 9.30 but not paid till 10.

What's your boss's reasoning ask her to explain?

loonyrationalist · 14/03/2011 13:16

I think you need to talk with her/hr. If you need to be there from 9.30 then you should be paid from that time. If not then the rota should be changed to 10am. It is not on to expect daily unpaid overtime for admin type tasks which I think is what you are saying is happening.

flowery · 14/03/2011 13:20

What's the current situation? Are you required to be in work at 9.30, do you do this now, and are you currently paid for it? How do things work at the moment?

Eglu · 14/03/2011 13:20

It sounds like she can't do that to me. Unless she is asking you all to come in at 10 from now on.

compo · 14/03/2011 13:23

At our place we are paid until closing time, so 5pm but often don't leave the building until 5.10pm after we've chucked people out, put money away, made building safe , so we take the ten minutes as time owed , it all adds up and if you save it you can get a Friday afternoon off ag some point for example

girlylala0807 · 14/03/2011 13:58

Her reasoning is we are key holders and should accept the responsibility

Sorry, yes we are paid for it now

If you are required to be at work from 9.30 and are currently paid for that, she can't suddenly decide now that she is going to cut your pay by 30 minutes each day. Presumably she will still be requiring you to be at work at 9.30?

Eglu · 14/03/2011 15:58

Responsibility doesn't mean no pay. She is taking the piss.

girlylala0807 · 14/03/2011 17:28

Yes,

still want us in at 9.30.

Will see how it goes over next few weeks and phone hr if we need to, its a massive company.

Thanks all.

I wouldnt think someone can change your pay and effectively give you a paycut just on their say so without you signing a new contract. Why wait for a few weeks? If she's telling you she's going to do this then phone HR now.

mrsbiscuits · 16/03/2011 13:02

She can't change your contract without your consent. If you have been paid from 9.30am up till now that, by custom and practice, has become your start time regardless of what she says. Do not sign anything to the contrary and insist that you are paid.

plupedantic · 20/03/2011 21:46

Sounds like a change to conditions.
