Silly question about handing in notice

I am just getting nerves about handing in my notice!
What is the best way to go about it? Make an appointment with my boss, hand him letter of resignation, quick "chat" with background to the decision?
Or is it better not to wait for an appointment but just go and knock on his door with my letter in my hand?

In my opinion just go and knock on his door, hand him the letter and suggest that you book a time if he wants to discuss it. This way the not ice period starts at the right time (to suit you).

He may want to chat with HR before discussing it further with you.
