Publicans - any advice where to start?

Hi

I may buy a licensed premises, which only opens occassionally. I already have a job but am considering going part time (3 days or 5 days mornings only) and just opening the pub 3 nights at the weekend and then for one week during a music event week in the summer.

It is licensed for alcohol and has live music but has no food license.

Can anyone advise me wbout the responsibilities of a publican, including:

ordering stock and looking after it and the equipment
employing bar staff
Public liability insurance
Any requirements for keeping the license

Anything else I should know?

Opening a pub during a recession is not ideal but the premises is extremely popular and has a long tradition of being a well know trad music venue. It only opens for particular events and a lot of the pub owners here would also have a second income from other work, which is what I am intending to maintain by keeping some part time work outside of the pub.

We are in Ireland, so the rules will be different (probably somewhat more relaxed than UK), but will be similar. TBH its the employing bar staff/maintaining stick & equipment bits I am most nervous about!

Lastly, I have three children, so is their nay advice that any parents can give, about maintaining the family boundaries when you live above a pub?

Thanks in advance :)

You really are best on a specialist pubs forum rather than a general freelance work from home one

Yes that's probably true. We put in an offer today, so if the sale proceeds I will get involved in some of the forums, so I can pick up some tips and compare notes. Its very exciting. I've never worked in a pub but DH has and knows how to change barrells, clean pumps, do the stock takes etc we will be on a steep learning curve
