Can I claim income support/tax credits etc and be registered as self-employed with HMRC?

I am trying to get my freelance work off the ground but not got any clients yet so I've registered for income support. But I really need to start being able to put some of my expenses through the business because even though I'm not working as such, I'm spending a lot of time on the phone, going to meetings etc.

If I register with HMRC as self-employed, can I still claim benefits (am a lone parent).

Thanks
