my job doesn't work part time

I went back in Sept - 29 hours over 4 days (full time is 40 hours) its working really well from a family point of view but I don't think the job role fits being part time. I work with all men, I'm the only part timer, they are very supportive but I'm simply drowning in work with no flexibility to do that little bit more.
There are other jobs in the company I could do that would fit better part time - more project management than technical work, I have been approached by the dept asking if I would consider a move as they need my 'skills' but I don't know how to discuss it with my manager.
How can I turn my failure into a positive and try and get a departmental move? our dept is under reasourced and desperate to hang on to people

Do you have any specific areas of expertise - a specialism that you contribute to your current department? If so, you might offer to be on call to your current dept in relation to that area (and that one only!) even if you did move departments.

That way you can sell it to your current department as a way that they hold onto expertise that they might otherwise lose completely. I've seen people negotiate flexible working arrangements on a similar basis in the past.
