Would anyone be able to explain to me what the Business Manager (HR) role is please? it is a new term to me and I came across it recently.

BM's do lots of non-standard and project-directed stuff. They don't normally have any day to day responsibilities and their workload ebbs and flows (cue long hours sometimes). It can be a role doing nothing but project management, or you can end up as effectively the right hand man of the HR director, getting involved in strategy and the like. It can be a very demanding, but very very interesting role.

Key skills needed are ability to grasp issues quickly, ability to get on wiht range of people at all levels (because you will be liaising a lot with other departments) and willingness to run towards fires rather than away from them. If you like routine it will probably not suit, but if you can't bear seeing a problem without wanting to get on and fix it then you're the right type of person.

If you have to leave work at a certain time each day and do not have flexibility for overtime, etc, then best to point this out at interview in case they expect a higher flexibility commitment than you are able to give.
