Presents for Nursery carers

Hi,

DS is going to move from the 'little baby' room to the 'big baby' room at nursery soon. Is it usual to get the nursery nurses who have cared for him in the little baby room a thank you present?

They are very nice and DS is so happy there - he goes to them with open arms every morning

Also, I've been thinking about Christmas. What sort, if any, gifts do you get for your child's carers? This is my first experience with nurseries and I want to do the right thing as I am so happy with the nursery.

We got DD's two nursery workers a small gift box each from Lush of relaxing bath bomb and soap type things. Went down quite well.

My DS's had their last day in Day Nursery on Wednesday, they start full time school this week.
I bought their carers a tin of Belgian chocolate biscuits, to have with their tea break.
A bit mean I know, would have bought more but DH moaned about that.

At Christmas for nursery staff I always get some kind of box of stuff, like a Body Shop basket with 6 or 7 things in that they can share. That way they can choose something they like. At my ds's old nursery they explicitly said that no-one was to give a gift to any particular staff member, it had to be a joint present. That would depend on the set-up I guess, and how many people had been involved in your child's care.
I don't know if I'm thinking of the same thread as codswallop, but there was certainly a "lively" debate about giving teachers presents. I am more generous with nursery staff as they pay is usually worse.
Hope the move to "big room" goes well!

My daughter is also moving this from the baby room to the toddler room. I feel really mean now as all I got the baby room staff was a bucket of those Heroes chocs things (it was a last minute dash to Tesco and that was about the best on offer!). I figure it has to be something they call all share..I'm not going to start getting individual presents for all of them!

I give them a box of chocolate to share. I was thinking of buying a few bottles of wine, but wasn't sure if it was appropriate for some reason? What do others think about wine as present to nursery teachers/school teachers?

Also a present for the nursery goes down well, eg: books or a picture for the room.

As a nursey nurse, I can tell you that a parent giving us gifts always makes us feel appreciated. Yes it's a job but you do get attached to the children you care for and it's sad when they leave. A big box of chocolates to share was the usual present, around christmas we would get a lot and we could take a few home each. Wine wasn't so easy. Not all of us drank and we couldn't drink at work (obviously) or after (because of varying shifts, driving etc.). Sometimes we got individual presents, mugs, diaries, body shop baskets etc. It depended on the parent and how much they wanted to spend.
Sainsbury's are doing some brilliant mugs at the minute on Winnie the pooh and co. Don't know how much they are but we got one each in baby room (6 of us) when a baby left last week. There was a few tears too. Don't know if that helps but I thought you might like a view from the other side of the fence.

Thornton's do a "chocolate plaque" on which you can have your own message of thanks piped. Inexpensive, personal and tasty!!!!

Fairymum - I have had wine from pupils and have been really surprised but very apprectiative! Mind, I teach secondary pupils and it tends to be from older pupils when they leave after exams.

Thanks for your ideas. I had a look in Lush the other day. They do a gift pack of bath bombs, so I thought I would get one of those. I know there are two main carers, but am not sure how many others help out during the day so figured those and some choccies could be shared.

We have a msg board in the main room so parents see as they come in. It has our picture, name, qualification and hours, I only work 10-3 so most parents miss me. The board gives them an idea of us 'invisible'carers. Just lets them know we exist really. Also it helps when it comes to presents, they know who they are buying for.

There were 3 main carers in Lily's baby room - so I got each of them a £5 UCI cinema voucher. Felt a bit tight since it costs £6 for a film apparently! (but couldn't stretch to a £10 voucher each)

DS1 has just left to start school and I took in a number of packets of chocolate coated chocolate chip cookies (Tesco's Finest, not their value range or anything!). When his main carer left a month earlier, I gave her some Lush bath bombs.
It never occurred to me to buy anything when he moved from Toddler room to Preschool though and I doubt I'll do this when DS2 moves up either.
