how do you find out if you have to pay back maternity pay if you dont return?

someone mentioned to me if i dont go back to work i may have to pay back some money...

how do i find this out without directly asking my boss? i dont want her to think i might come back only to avoid paying her back..

You are either on statutory maternity pay, in which case you don't have to pay it back, or you are on an enhanced maternity pay where your employer gave you more than SMP. If you are on enhanced you should have been briefed by your employer (whilst you were pregnant) what terms there were surrounding you receiving it, for example what happens if you don't return to work. My guess is that you are on SMP but you should ring up your employer just to check. If you are going to quit, leave it to the last minute so you can receive all your SMP and your accrued annual leave.
