Any complimentary therapists?

I'm not sure this was the right place to put this but I guess most people use last 15 minutes anyway.

I'm on a Comp. Therapy course (Aroma, Swedish and Reflex) and just found out I'm pregnant. I've been put on leave until I have permission from my doctor to carry on.

I was just wondering what would happen in industry when you get pregnant? My college is all into recreating the work place so very strict on punctuality and attendance (ironic as my parents are late for work/ leave early to cover school runs so that I don't get in trouble! ) so I want to play them at their own game if it's possible.

I saw my GP yesterday and he's written me a letter saying he can't see the problem as long as I'm avoiding things that can't be used in pregnancy. Got to go back with £15 because I didn't have any money and didn't predict needing any.

I can't believe that a therapist would have to go on ML as soon as they found out they were pregnant, so anyone know what happens?

I'm not allowed to go back to college without a doctors letter (so I will be back Monday!) Some oils are not suitable for use in pregnancy so they're funny about you continuing.

I'm asking what happens when a therapist gets pregnant, according to my college I can't continue (they're expecting a no from my GP) but I can't see that a therapist would be on leave from the moment they find out they're pregnant.

pg isnt an illness or confinement.naturally ceratin oils will be contraindicated, and if necessary a risk assessment but pg doesnt necessitate being signed off for duration

is it a private college or public funded
do they have student welfare office etc

Well that's what I thought, you can't just go off work just because you're pregnant and as I said my college is all for creating a work place environment which is why I'm interested.

The only definite no I can see is being used as a client for practice, we have an odd class number anyway so not too hard to work around.

It's a public college, there is student services but I'm hoping now I have my letter it's not going to be a problem.

most pg women work til late pg.naturally you discuss good practice and avoid risks (known contraindications) but overall do continue working

your gp may advise avoid certain oils,be sensible but certainly not a 9mth confinement

My GP said what's he supposed to know about complimentary therapy! He's done a very generalised letter saying that I can continue as long as I avoid anything not suitable for use in pregnancy, basically putting it back in her hands. He did say that pregnancy is very resilient anyway and people worry too much.

If I don't get the course done this year it will be a couple of years before I can do it, next year I'll have a tiny baby.

Well apparently, according to the college on being given my letter, 99% of oils are not suitable and they can't allow me to take the course. I'm so angry I've been crying. They've even put emotional blackmail on me of "you don't want to harm your baby" (oh dear, Randall and Hopkirk flashbacks! Shame I didn't get them then).

My tutor got her manager to come and talk to me, then she got someone else to come and talk to me (ie three on one!) and then she got Student Services to come and talk to me. I got quite cross and said "what's the point in all this? You're all saying the same thing, which I've accepted, and we're not getting anywhere or changing anything" by the time it was three to one I was just sobbing and couldn't talk because I had said it all and couldn't do it again.

I have complained to Student Services and said it needs to be policy "we don't allow pregnant women to take the course" and not try to lay it on a GP who has no idea what essential oils do or make it sound like a choice that they emotionally blackmail you into taking their option. It needs to be black and white they shouldn't be making it sound like you might be in with a chance of continuing.

I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to complete the course now. I won't be able to afford it when I get married and I won't be able to work to earn because it's hard to find work that doesn't clash with Doulaing.
