Question about referees for new job

It's so long since I've done this! New company have asked for two referees but I haven't worked for seven years. I think my old boss is still at my old company, so that's one but can I put a personal referee down as the other one? Can it be a friend or does it have to be someone of "standing" IYKWIM?

Phone them up and ask what they would view as suitable perhaps?

Dh has just got a job after almost five years. He asked a friend of his who fishes with him and a mutual friend who is a teacher. Obviusly they can only give a character reference but that should be sufficient in you situation.
