Can a promotion be seen as a 'suitable alternative'?

Hi

I have been told that we are having a restructure and my layer of management is being removed. This means myself and one other will lose their job.

However, i have been told that both of us are to be invited to apply for a newly created role within the restructure, which is a more senior role.

Do i get any priority on securing this role as i am on maternity leave? Could this role be seen as a suitable alternative, which would mean i get preference in securing the role?

Thanks
