When does your employer have to confirm which job you're returning to

I am going back to work in December after 9 months maternity leave. My employer has confirmed my return to work by letter but since then I have heard from a colleague who is currently covering my position at work that numerous changes are proposed and she/I may have our roles swapped around Work have not informed me of this and I am now wondering if/when they should do this. If not, can I assume that I am returning to the same role? As I have taken longer than 6 months I have a right to return to an equivalent position if the same job is not available, which it is, so can I assume that if they haven't told me otherwise then I am returning to the same role?

Why don't you ask them?

I'm going to but wondered if they should have told me!

Rather than hear it from a colleague who I could be competing against for the role.

There's no specific date they have to tell you by. However given you are returning in just a few weeks I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to write, confirming the date you will be returning and asking for their confirmation that you will be returning to the same job.
