Paying maternity leave cover more than me

blanchedevereaux · 22/10/2010 10:03

I work for a international business, headquarted in the UK, but my 2 immediate bosses are Americans currently on secondment in the UK.

I am 28wk preg with my second. My boss has offered my maternity leave cover to a colleague in the US who is a higher grade, and higher paid then me.

He has made clear it is cover but seems to have bypassed our HR team entirely.

Where do I stand? I'm a bit annoyed this person will get a lot more money than me for doing my role while I am away.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sorry - but it's really none of your business what your maty cover is being paid. If you don't think you are being paid enough then bring that up with your employers - it's up to them what they shoose to pay their employees

Ok, I just assumed it would be offered on the same terms I am on.

Irritating but nothing you can do.

If this person's is at a higher pay grade than you, just because they will temporarily be working at a lower level to cover another job doesn't mean the company is obliged to reduce their pay. I think it would be reasonable in these circumstances to continue to pay the individual concerned their normal salary.

It's really up to your employer if/how they cover your maternity leave and who does it, and if the person covering your tasks is employed in the US that makes a difference as well - UK employment law doesn't cover overseas staff as you can imagine.

What makes you think it's bypassed the HR team?

Thanks for comments, I'll look on the bright side and see it as a way to maybe negotiate a pay rise when I return!

I know it has bypassed HR as we have a policy that all jobs must be advertised via a system that is managed by HR. My boss hasn't done this, he has just been emailing my jd out to people he thought may be interested.

Some of my colleagues, on reading this thread, would say: " I wonder if he is sleeping with the person he has asked to do the maternity cover"

My maternity leave cover last time was paid less than I was, so it cuts both ways.
