switching from p/t to compressed hours

i've been working 3 days/week with a bit of home working on the other 2 days - but have now been told that they need full time hours for the job i do (i work in central govt and it's a policy area that will get increasingly high profile in the months ahead)

at the same time, a colleague with a frankly less interesting job is leaving.

i have first refusal for either job - one less high-profile and interesting but part-time, or the job i love, but more of it...

my dd is 2, and i find it hard getting work done at home on my days off and find i resent the interruption - would rather have less time with her but not have to think about work.

has anyone been in a similar situation? am just a bit stuck choosing.

but tired so this probably makes no sense...

Do you have childcare when working from home?

babyphat · 20/10/2010 08:31

no, no childcare. i just field urgent calls, emails on blackberry, am essentially available whenever but don't get big chunks of work done. makes it hard to properly focus on dd (not that i spend all day gazing at her, but just being able to switch off from work), that's why i am wondering if would be better to do more hours in the office. my title didn't make sense but meant to say am considering whether to try to get full time hours but compressed into 4 days

If you're trying to work while spending time with your DD you are probably not doing either to your satisfaction, so it sounds to me as though compressed hours would suit you(assuming compressed hours is something that is possible where you work). You'd obviously have more time in the office but presumably on your day off would be able to spend it all as quality time with your DD.
