I currently work as a tax manager for a big 4 accountancy firm. I think that i would like to work for HMRC but i'm not sure whether i would be able to apply for a role at Inspector level (or similar). I had a quick look at the website and it suggested that they only took on graduate recruits. Is this correct?

I know it's a long shot, but Mumsnet seems to provide anwsers to most questions!

I worked for HMRC until last year. TBH the only way you could go in at Inspector level ATM would be via one of the Graduate or Legal Trainee schemes.

Earlier this year they closed 130 offices and made a lot of staff redundant. They won't be recruiting externally (apart from the special schemes) for the foreseeable future.

Thanks elvis, I thought as much. To be honest I'm probably not looking to move until after I've had another child, prob around 2-3 years' time. I just wondered if it's possible to enter at hmrc at inspector level, as I'm only aware of people moving in thd other direction, ie joining us at manager level or above.

I don't think this is going to be viable. I just can't face doing tax advisory work for the rest of my life! The trouble is I'm the main earner in our family so can't afford to take a big pay cut, and with ten years of experience in corporate tax i don't think I can switch to anything else on anywhere near the same money.

I guess I'll have to keep playing the lottery!
