Anyone else fed up of being treated like a second class citizen because they work part-time?

I hated working part-time. Worst of both worlds. I was part-time for 5 years after my 3rd child was born until DH got a TA's post and could work school hours. The relief when I finally went back full-time was immense.

Work think you aren't committed enough and nothing meaty comes your way. You end up with all the shitty jobs to do at home because you are there more.

Never again!

It used to annoy me but now I just think 'unlucky, 4 day weekend for me while you're working!'
I also don't let people pile a full time job's worth of work on me anymore as it was completely stressing me out, trying to do that in three days.
It can still rankle a bit and I did used to try and change people's attitudes but I wasn't particularly successful!

Its so frustrating, I have had a child and spend one more day a week at home than other people but I "can't" do the same anymore.

So they say but when I prove them wrong it is ignored.

Very frustrating. I have been back for 18 months and about 16 or those months I have worked a 5 day week squashed into 3 days. I have a job share now who is utterly lovely but largely useless, so it continues.

And I really really hate when people say on a Wednesday, 'oh you're off tomorrow aren't you?' NO! I'm not OFF, I don't get bloody paid to work those days. Yet I still answer emails and take calls from lovely but useless job-share.

I am fed up of people saying when do you work again - when I always have Friday's off and leave early (2pm) one day. Plus its in the team calendar - its not rocket science.

But I do have to remind myself that I am very fortunate because I get paid very well for working 3.5 days (not meaning to show off, just want to make sure I am not being too ungrateful!)

Ah see I get paid crap wages for schlepping up to London and doing three days. We worked out that, after childcare, travel etc I go to work for £3k pa. But unfortunately it's £3k that we need.

I wouldn't feel so resentful if my salary was better :)

I work 29hrs pw and have done so for 6 yrs.

I STILL get fed up when another colleague says she can't remember which afternoons I'm not there!

And I seem to be forever complaining about a lack of communication in that I don't always get told about decisions that are made in the afternoons.

Do appreciate my free afternoons though!

I stopped caring - just turn up and do the job now. I make sure what I do is done properly and nobody has an excuse to complain.
Now though because I've found my workload has increased I have upped my hours so I am only 1.5 hours/pw short of being a "full timer". However I still do two days at home, on Friday my day ends at noon - well meant to but sometimes I'm still working away at home while poor dd is trying to entertain herself :(

Yep it seems that if you can be there 9 to 5 (even if a couple of hours of that is in the pub) then it ironically, looks like you are more committed.

I only worked part time when my children were very small, and returned to full time once they were at school.

IMO part time isn't easy, as you can feel out of the loop. Also, while you know which afternoon or days you don't work, it's silly to expect everyone else to know, particularly if there are several part timers. I work in a school with a two-week timetable, and some of our part timers have different non-working days in week 1 and week 2 - so it's daft to expect anyone other than the part timer to keep track of who works when!

If you are happy with working part time, then don't let it bother you - just do the hours you're contracted to do, and accept that you might feel a bit out of the loop simply because you're not there all the time
