Increasing length of maternity leave

Can I check that I am right here?

I had planned to take 28 weeks of maternity leave and then use a "lieu bank holiday" (from August) and annual leave to return to work in the new year. This is what I told work I would be doing.

I am now in the fortunate position that I can afford to extend my maternity leave to the full 52 weeks. I know that you have to give 8 weeks notice if you alter your planned return date, but the examples are all for going back earlier. I assume I can vary it the other way and return later?

Also, will I still be able to carry all the bank holidays into the next year, or is this a question of company policy?
