If you work for the NHS, do you get paid 'extra' when doing 'keeping in touch days' whilst on mat leave.

I have been asked if I would like to do some keeping in touch days during the last three months of my mat leave, when i will be on SMP only. I would be interested but only if they pay you for them as I will have to pay for childcare and petrol (cant manage this on SMP!)

Can't seem to find the answer to this from my line manager or payroll.

Has anyone had any experience of this?

I have been assured by my manager that if I do a couple of KIT days I will get paid for them (midwife). I'd hope that your HR dept would know x

when it came in a few years back, our nhs payroll wasn't set up to pay as done and I took the time as TOIL and took the days off when I returned.

allegedly now you can put in a timesheet and get it paid but I've not yet had any staff go through and have to put it on my turnaround doc.

I don't know anything about the NHS, but you should be paid a daily rate for KIT days.

I was paid an hourly rate in addition to my mat pay. It was paid a month on arrears as if it was an unsocial hours payment. You can only work 7.5hr shifts up to a max of 10 days. I used it to maintain clinical skills whilst off for 9 months so I could hit the ground running on my return

I work for a local government and got paid an hourly rate for KIT days. The form asks how many hours you did per day.

I think that I only get paid for KIt days once my maternity pay has stopped (private sector) - hence I am not doing any until the second half!

Whether or how much you get paid is entirely between you and your employer. Having said that most employers pay the normal rate, and if the woman is still on maternity pay, that would usually mean making up the pay to normal rate. It's not necessarily a daily rate as lots of people use KIT days for meetings or similar and don't work a whole day.

I'm sure HR will be able to tell you the answer, but more to the point, why isn't your manager sorting this out for you? He/she can perfectly easily ring HR, say you would like to do some KIT days and ask them to confirm what he/she needs to do to ensure you get paid.

Hmph, I'm an academic and my Uni refused to either pay or give time off in leiu for KIT. Tight so-and-so's . Sorry to derail this thread, but even TOIL seems a good deal.

Did you do the KIT days dontrun? They are not obligatory on either the employer or the employee so if your employer didn't want to pay you could have just not done them.
