Does anyone know the ins and outs of maternity cover for permanent full time roles? Is it possible for a company to put another permanent staff member into a maternity cover role, if their original job no longer exists?

i don't see why not. but they would have to leave once the person taking maternity leave came back

They can put someone else into a maternity cover role even if their job does still exist (I did mat cover like this a few years ago)! But as Starlover says, they would have to move once the post-holder came back from mat leave.
