Speculative applications advice

Is anyone able to give me some advice about how to approach firms with a speculative application. Is this done formally these days? or would an email with an attached CV suffice? And if so what should be included in the email/covering letter? I will be applying to law firms.

Letter is better

Or would it be better to get an agent to approach firms?

Letter, printed and posted. Plus you'll find it next to impossible to find the correct e-mail address for any decent sized company.

Forget agents. They'll either a) get turned away or b) give the job to someone else.

Letter it is then!

Thanks both.

I would say its not worth targetting the public sector. Every public sector organisation I've worked in (I work in HR) don't accept speculative CV's as they have to advertise.
