Hi I have just formed my own limited company but at the moment I am the only employee. I am trying to register with HMRC online but unsure whether to register as a company or as an individual for PAYE. I assumed it would be company but then thought thats a bit odd to register as a comapny to pay my own PAYE?

Can anyone point me in the right direction before I have to resort to phoning them!!

register as the company - it's a seperate identity to you as an individual. The company employs you, so is responsible for your PAYE.

thank you shrinkingviolet, have just looked at it and it requires details for the employer PAYE reference and also Accounts office reference - I have neither! Confused

You can call HMRC to register your company on 0845 60 70 143

This gives you an idea of what sort of information they ask you to register your company but I recommend reading the entire page to find out what PAYE is about.

You will get your employer PAYE reference and the accounts office reference after you've done the registration.

thanks riksti, I may just call them instead of sitting here fretting.

Have you thought about what accounting help you will need - not just payroll but company accounts and tax returns?

If you are a freelancer selling your services to other businesses have you heard of IR35?

Lots of useful information at Business Link.
