I have applied for a school nurse post. It's a band 5. My experience is A&E for many years with adult and paediatric experience.

What are hot topics at the moment? I have got quite a bit off the DOH website and Nursing Times etc but wanted to hear it from the horses mouth so to speak.
TIA.

Hi, the main areas we school nurses cover are:
Child protection, children in care, vaccination (HPV, DTP, BCG), screening (audio, vision, height and weight), PSHE (sex ed (yrs 8-10), puberty (yrs 5-6), hand hygiene (yrs 3-4), dental health (yrs 3-4), drugs and alcohol if required by school), liaison with social services/drs/physios/OT/SLT/SENCo etc, health needs assessments, careplans for children with chronic conditions requiring management in school, signposting children/young people and their families to other services, prescribing (from Band 6). As long as it's health protection, health promotion or health education you can consider it part of the role.

Good luck and let me know if you need any further information...

I was a school nurse for 15 months, 2008-2009.

Big issues for me were child protection, Every Child Matters (gen awareness, not huge amount of detail), childhood obesity, vaccinations, multidisciplinary working.
