Anyone work evenings in a supermarket?

what's it like and is the pay any good?

I'm considering this at the moment and would appreciate any info, thanks!!

I do-I work in the cash office of Morrisons-very local-can choose your hours as long as over the minimum-approx 12 hours, I think-I work one evening a week 6-11 and five hours on a Saturday and five on A sunday or I work two evenings a week and just Sundays.The pay is £5.72 I think and as it is my only job I don't get taxed.
The only thing you might find is that you HAVE to work Saturdays or alternate Saturdays-I think most shops insist you do.
But I like it-I take home between £400.00 and £450.00 per month which is half the mortgage!!

what does working in the cash office involve? I had only considered working on a till or the shop floor staching shelves but I feel I'd prefer the cash office.

My friend works 2 night shifts, sat and sun night and it pays her mortgage.
She gets to be with the kids and they dont know that she has been away from them.

Its nights though....yeuch!

My friend does 3 nights and a Sat or Sun in M&S - her nights are 8pm till midnight so it's pretty tiring for her but it means she is with the children all day and she always has free childcare when she works (dh!).

It's what I would do if I didn't have a freelance career - I'd do that over going out to work in the day so that I could be with the children during the daytime.

Dh works nights as a manager for Tescos and gets a good wage and looks after kids in the day whilst I work hence no childcare costs.

think I'll try the supermarkets round here!

I used to work 7.5 hours on a sunday in Tesco and earnt £11 an hour stacking shelves in the days of double pay I hated till work, garage, Deli, Kiosk, Stock control & FMC are quite nice if it's a nice team, I liked shelf stacking as it was physical - great workout! and you just get on with it and have loads of time to think about stuff, nights is great fun as it's more relaxed than days.

Tesco were very good with time off for the children and maternity - also you get paid a percentage of your hours for each bank holiday even if they are not your days to work.

Obviously you can get a load of bitchiness too!

I have done it twice, the first time when I was at uni and I loved it. the second time was when dd was 2 and I hated it, mainly because I was on the till, its quite stressful. Try for shop floor or office. Theres definetly a pecking order but the night staff were always less cliquey.

hi ssd, i work for waitrose 3 eve a week and earn around £200/mnth and tbh couldn't stomach the Tesco etc (managed for them in late 90's) now. I would not do it if there was not a Waitrose near by, half because I support their ethics towards people and food and half because Tesco etc will have their pound of flesh off you and always hound you for more, more more.

As for Waitrose and my little job, I love it, filling fruit, veg & flowers. Its a really friendly and calm (s true!) place to work. I'd recommend it to anyone breaking back in to work and although they pay about 10p/hr less than the high street people, you get profit share and great benefits. Not experienced any cliques, might be cause I work too few hrs/ brain to soft to notice/ not bothered but imho it because they don't exist. Most of my workmates are lads/ students but i they are all spot on and professional.

Anyway to cut anymore blah, would do it but only for upper end retailer / food hall. Good Luck

Sorry-the cash office is where all the money/cheques etc are processed throughout the day.I had started on the till for a bout 6 months but they knew I had worked in a bank for 17 years so as soon as there was a more responsible position available I went for it.Can you believe though,I deal with thousands upon thousands of pounds and yet get paid no more than a cashier does?
It's good for the brain though and I thought it would look better on the c.v!!
