Am sure an expert will be along soon but in the meantime, ime, private medical insurance is BUPA or another provider for usual medical treatment where you don't want to wait for a NHS appointment or choose to see a consultant privately. PHI is where you can no longer work - usually 75% of your salary. Normally includes death in service provision (eg 4 times your salary paid to your nominated dependent).
