Anyone work in corporate communications?

I'm considering changing job as I currently have a long commute and need to work closer to home. Finding it a bit difficult to find anything suitable and flexible enough to fit around family. I work in marketing at the moment, and have seen a job advertised in corporate communications - which is related, but not exactly what I do now.

Wondered if anyone else works in this area and could tell me the pros and cons of this type of work? I'm a bit worried it might be slightly on the bureacratic side - mainly churning out newsletters etc, but I could be underestimating what's involved.

Any advice much appreciated.

It's more like external affairs role; so depending on the type of company, communicating with their external stakeholders/influencers - e.g. financial community if they are a plc; pressure groups; government and other (usually non-general public) specialist groups. Involves lots of PR type stuff; but also input into corporate brand reputation management- i.e. researching what external audiences think; knowing what media they consume; then running campaigns/initiatives to get their attention and keep them onside.

I've not worked client-side, but bureaucracy would be the least of my worries. At its most challenging, think what BP are dealing with at the moment and what they need to do to rebuild their reputation.

Thanks - the role I was looking at was for communication with a very specific group of stakeholders and seems to involve establishing a lot of processes/procedures etc, hence my comment re bureaucracy, but I may have misunderstood.

I worked in a corporate comms department - I had responsibility for the internal stakeholders ie employees + was v bureaucratic! However, I loved the contact with the staff (+ also knowing everything that was going on in the company!) was v challenging when it came to communicating the business plan to employees - also did a lot of work on measuring what imapct internal comms had on the bottom line - was v interesting.
