Accrued holiday while on maternity leave

Hi there

I'm taking a full year of maternity leave. I know I accrue benefits inc holiday while on maternity leave, but I'm trying to find out - as I'll be away for a year does this mean I'm entitled to a whole year's worth of holiday?

I work 2 days a week and am entitled to 9 days holiday a year. I'm planning on adding any accrued holiday to the end of my mat leave but a whole year's worth seems excessive! Not that I'm complaining if that really is the case

I work for a very small company - no HR person let alone dept - so I'm expected to tell them what I'm entitled to!

I don't know if this depends on your employer. I work 4 days a week and am currently on this year's annual leave prior to mat leave starting on 5 Sep - I will be off for a year and during this time I will accrue all of my annual leave (24 days) plus the statutory bank hols and work closure days (another 8 days), of which I have to take the statutory days immediately following my mat leave, but can then negotiate the rest with my employer. Not sure how this applies across other employers - have you tried emailing the Citizens Advice Bureau or looking at the Directgov website?
It does seem a funny arrangement though that you accrue leave while on leave, but I'm also not complaining as between this years leave and next years leave and mat leave I'm off for 14 months!! (But I do work for a HUGE employer).
I hope you find the information you need.

You should accrue all your holidays and then can take them at the end or can carry all / some over if your employer allows it. And if you have any left when you go off then you can take them at the beginning. It's helpful to have a pay cheque before you go back to work.

Thanks v much, I've looked into it a bit more and I am entitled to the full year's holiday plus bank holidays. Grin

Just something to add - if you are off for a year, then you do accrue the holidays, and they should allow you to carry them over, as you haven't had the opportunity to take them during the year you accrued them!
