Who would you put down as a second reference in this situation

I am putting down my current line manager. I've had the same line manager for over 6 years, and not sure I could contact any previous ones for the second reference, whether they'd still exist or whether they'd remember me to provide a reference.

I could ask someone else in the same organisation, not sure who, someone I had done some work with maybe?

Or I did a course very recently, just did one module of it and an assignment. The tutor for that?

Or I did a qualification back in 2007/08, a postgrad certificate. Again, not sure if I'd be able to contact him, but could try....

Which of these options seem best?

Contact the previous employers. Even if your specific manager is not there the company will have records of you and will be able to do at least a basic reference (employment dates, sickness record etc). If it is a large company with a personnel department they would tend to do the references anyway.

well the one before that was a temp job, i was only there 3 months, i doubt very much they'd have records of me, and I was through an agency so they won't care about sickness etc.
The one before that I didn't get on very well there and would rather not use them!
Sorry for employment issues by stealth!

Three months is quite a long time - enough time to assess if you were basically a good employee. They should still have records of you - it is a legal requirement.

Alternatively, if you were actually employed by the agency get the reference from them. they should definitely have records and will have had a report back from the people you were working with.

It would be better to get a reference from someone you actually worked for than some of the other options you put forward
