just tell me if what im thinking is right.

backstory - i got a part time job last october. my immediate supervisor (racist bigot) doesnt like me. she threw her weight about a bit and i got my probationary period extended from 6 months to 12 months. my standard of work is without fault. they admitted as much at my appraisal. the reason they gave for extending probation was petty in the extreme - that i had my mobile phone in my pocket (so does everyone else!!) and that i refused to cover a shift at short notice because i had a prior dental appointment!) i didnt put up much of a fight really. i knew this had come from the supervisor who didnt like me bacause i wont bitch about all the foreigners coming over and 'stealing our nhs services' blah blah blah....you get the picture.

in the meantime ive been successful in an application to the police. start date imminent. while i was on probation my notice period was clearly a week. i had to tell my senior manager because the police needed a reference. she seemed delighted for me.

today i got to work where i was pounced on my 2 senior managers who took me off probation. no warning - weird!! my face must have been a picture because i think i looked horrified rather than pleased. i thought this would mean i had to give more notice!

now ive dug out my contract. it says
"you are entitled to receive in writing one weeks notice of termination increasing to two after two years service. Thereafter your notice entitlement will increase by one week for each additional complete year of service up to a maximum of 12 weeks. (you are required to give the same minimum period of notice in writing)"

i am taking this to mean that i still only have to give one weeks notice given that i have only been there for 10 months??

is this what you would also glean from this? if so i have no idea why they suddenly and without warning chose to take me off probabtion - the cynic in me thought it was so i had to give more notice!, but it appears not??

what do you think? cheers in advance.

Maybe they think you will report them to the police for discrimination.......

ruddynorah · 20/07/2010 17:10

yes one week.

don't worry about the rest of it, onwards and upwards!

cheers. i feel a bit bad now at how horrified i looked, my immediate thought was that i would be stuck with a months notice and visions of summer off with the kids began to fade before my eyes....

but it seems thats not the case from my contract then.
maybe they are guilt tripping me. my manager did ask if i would need to think about the new job offer....eerm. no. not really!

weird weird thing to do though as soon as i tell her ive got another job offer.

I think you can take comfort in the fact you're actually doing a cracking job and the fact that suddenly you're leaving. Egg on face of supervisor, who, if you were still on extended probation, might find that the trumped up charges for extending your probation would be investigated by HR, as no doubt the previous person left after similar time/treatment from supervisor (dare you to ask how long your predecessor lasted and why she left?!). Bet you she'll have destroyed the notes/record of the meeting.

my predecessor lasted 6 months. when they took her up to talk about probationary period she said she would save them the trouble as she was leaving!

says it all really.
