Norma had been a Mumsnet regular over the years across the boards, with a real zest for politics, feminism and strong opinions about Boris Johnson, as anyone at the MN 15th birthday party will tell you. Remembering THE Heckle which was epic. Love her for it. She also ran the Christmas appeal which would have been an astonishing amount of work. She cared enough for others to make it happen. Norma genuinely touched the lives of so many here on Mumsnet, ours included. Such a compassionate beautiful soul.

It was desperately shocking to hear of her death in August. She had been very ill and in the end her body couldn't cope any more. Devastating for her husband and their wonderful children, their families and friends. They will miss her terribly.

Norma really wasn't one to burden others with her worries, but was a very kind and selfless friend. So supportive of others. Generous to a fault in many ways, and very bloody entertaining. We can all learn from her.

We were so glad when her family accepted our offer of a Woolly Hug, truly there will be love in every stitch. Can you help us? We shall need donors and crafters alike, please post below with offers of help.

Norma was a passionate feminist and so we are looking a suffragette colours as our main palette, so please do check these out..

Main colours
Suffragette purple
Suffragette green
Cream but please one of the following - Debbie Bliss Rialto DK 02 ecru, Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK WM4 cream, or Drops Merino 01 off white

Accents - so not whole squares, but use within a square
Blues
Oranges
Black
Silvers
Red, but one of these two please, Drops Merino Extra Fine 11 Red, or Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK WM6 ‘Ruby’ please
Yellow please Drops merino extra fine DK no 24 ‘light yellow’

We have some ideas from knowing her across the boards, but different folk knew her differently, so please let us know if you have other ideas.

The ideas we have
Anything connected to feminism and the Suffragettes
Boris Out/ Tories Out/ love for the EU themes would be great.
She loved olives, Border collies, ravens and crows!
She was passionate about the NHS.
Bali was her favourite place.
She loved Banksy, Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett

With your love and support we’d actually like to create TWO blankets, one for her family and a second to auction for Refuge, to help raise some funds in her name. So if making, please try to make a couple of extras, especially in the Suffragette colours.

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.*

Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! Previous blankets can be seen on our website

When ready for posting, it will be the Teddington address, if you would like to include a card for Norma’s family, please do, we will pass it on.

Such a stalwart for so many here on Mumsnet, time to do something for her now

We were lucky to know her.

Sending so much love Thanks

@KnottyAndPistey - Got totally confused, thought I was PM’ing you two, requesting yarn for NSF - but in fact was posting on the thread and merrily typed in my RL name , address , postcode .....😱
Luckily @Thiswillbeinteresting reported it, bless her, and it was swiftly deleted ...

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/10/2020 13:55

My wool has arrived! Flowers to the donors.

Haven't opened it yet, though, as been planting bulbs this morning and my hands are filthy Grin

Yiayoula · 17/10/2020 13:57

@bookbook - that is amazing work !

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/10/2020 14:14

I have ordered some wool and will knit some plain squares in my slowly slowly fashion! (Bibbity here). Drops Forest Green is out of stock at the moment so I'll just do purple for now, but you know me I'll probably only get 2 done before the deadline!

I met Norma only once at a meetup so can't claim to really know her, but I know she was a most excellent poster on Mumsnet and was so very sad and sorry to hear of her passing. Her family absolutely deserve the wooliest hug possible [heart emoshy].

I love the suffragette square posted below ... so clever you are, you woolly folks!

KnottyAndPistey · 17/10/2020 16:37

It’s so lovely to see you on here Bibbity. You chip away, it’ll be absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much xx

@Yiayoula GrinGin omg I’ve done this too! Such a huge ohfuckitttttt moment!

I ordered some yarn for stash too for joining etc. Which is why probs there’s no green left. And it was the last one I did having ordered for everyone else. It came today which is extraordinary!

Great news wool is arriving. Thanks again fabulous donors xxx

I’ve ordered some wool so I’m in too, while I wait I will practice some olives!

WildEyedAndCrafty · 17/10/2020 18:43

My wool arrived today. Couldn't decide between the purples on the screen so got both. Will probably have to be just plain squares from me as I've had a pretty long break from knitting and I'm a bit rusty and even slower than before. Blush

I wonder if I could find this pattern again and do it as a crow .
I turned it into a chough 6 years ago . Hmmm .
Maybe without the Celtic swirls .

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 17/10/2020 20:41

Trumpton - that would be an amazing square if you could recreate it.

There's certainly some amazing crafters on here.

I'm still awaiting my wool delivery but, whilst waiting, I'm trying to plan some (albeit simpler) patterns for the blankets.

A glass of wine Wine, a beautiful notebook and my Jan Eaton book of crochet squares - a perfect Saturday night.
I'm so Rock n Roll!!! Wink

Jux · 17/10/2020 22:18

Oh, I'm shocked and really saddened to hear about Norma. Awful; she's been around forever and I've always found her posts worth reading. I'm so sorry Flowers

Is King Cole Leaf and Damson OK? I've got them in my basket but I'm a bit worried about the Damson, is it too dark?

KnottyAndPistey · 18/10/2020 09:41

I’m so sorry @Jux you found out this way. Your colours are perfect. Thank you so much xxx

Many thanks . Having a few days flat in bed but should be up an’ at ‘em by Tuesday . Be good to knit again x

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 18/10/2020 18:36

I knew @bookbook would post a pic of a fabulous square before I'd even ordered my wool! 🤣

@KnottyAndPistey. Yes, a big, sad, shock. 😢

Can you all please just stay well!

Xx

@Trumpton. Hope you're back to normal soon 🌷

MirandaWest · 18/10/2020 18:43

I’ve been knitting again recently and would love to help. If I could be sent some wool that would be wonderful.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 18/10/2020 19:10

I'm encouraging my 89 year old Mum to get back to knitting again. Her hands are a quite arthritic now and she can't do anything fancy any more, so I think squares for a blanket would be perfect for her. Until very recently she belonged to a knit and knatter group who did hats for preemies and that sort of stuff but the group has had to disband for now Sad. I hope the idea of contributing to Woolly Hugs can encourage her back to knitting! I'll take care of sending her the wool.

BellaVita · 18/10/2020 20:21

I remember Norma 😥.

I can help.

Much love to Norma’s family xx

bookbook · 18/10/2020 21:43

@ChippinLovesWoollyHugs - I just have a little stash of yarn , thats all!
I hope you are keeping well?
I loved listening to Douglas Adams' The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy , so 42 was obviously the answer
With much love in the stitches for Norma family
