We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

I can never get it right, so I go deliberately small, increase the height until I have a square, and then just add a border to take it to 12”. Would take a photo of my latest one but I’m at work - will try and remember when I get home.

Doesn’t always end up completely square, but gets it closer to it!

Sometimes going up/down a hook size helps you to get the right gauge too depending on whether you're a loose hooker or a tighter one.

I'd love to make a square and I have some stylecraft. I can knit and purl but not at all expert - can anyone suggest a likely number of stitches to cast on for a 12 inch square?

Thank you Flowers

#The Isle of Wight organiser said these gorgeous girls lived in extreme poverty in Belarus with very very little. #

I know am going to get lots of negativity, but please, Ladies, do get the facts right.
There is no extreme poverty in Belarus, not any more, not for the last 10 years!
Thank you so much for trying to help, for sending donations, but situation is different now. Areas which were affected by Chernobyl (happened 32! years ago) do get Government donations and on much higher wages than the rest of the country. There a lot of cheap second hand shops in Belarus and let me assure you kids do have enough clothes.
The reason they come here in 'the clothes they stand in' is because they are expecting new stuff. I do know what am talking about. Have you ever seen the parents of those 'poor kids' meeting them at the airport? I have, they do not give the impression of financially struggling people.
It is very hard for the genuine kid in need to get on one of the trips abroad. Those blankets do look amazing! So much work! But maybe homeless people here can make more use of them?

And please do not believe anything you see on the trips there either. People will show you the worst, nobody wants to stop the trips. But there are no Chernobyl kids any longer, the level of radiation is quite low for the last couple of years. I am not talking about groups of sick kids, kids in cancer remission. I am talking about the kids you all seem to think live in 'extreme poverty'.
I do know one Belarusian interpreter who saw kids being coached on how to ask for things from their host families. So please do check that those lovely gifts do go to genuine kids. Belarus is gradually overcoming all difficulties. I will be ripped apart, I know, but those beautiful blankets do need to be used and appreciated!

Bearfrills, I come from Belarus and I do know what am talking about. If the people on this thread expect to be taking for the ride, please do. But I cannot stand back and watch you, Ladies, making beautiful things, make donations for people who really do not benefit any more. If you do not believe it, please go there, hire a car and visit the country by yourself without guides. And most people from Belarus are sick and tired to be spoken like we are poor, cannot look after the kids and almost Third World Country. You just cannot accept the truth!

Bearfrills · 26/01/2018 16:49

And you're being deliberately goady. These blankets are for children, heaven fucking forbid we should want to make something nice to bring a smile to some children.

If you want to have a debate about which people you think do or don't deserve lovely things then by all means start you own thread but I suggest you back slowly out of this one.

If you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Stitchit. Thank you for informing me about Chernobyl disaster. My generation are Chernobyl children indeed. I am not talking about other project. Of course, I do participate and am passionate about helping genuine people. But most groups from Belarus, accept sick children from Borovlianw, do sadly consists of children whose parents are holding positions and can make sure their kids are chosen. The country is not poor any longer, resources need to be spend elsewhere. There are so many struggling kids and families in the UK. Some kids cannot even afford school dinners, cannot afford to go abroad. That's all. It is your choice of course but you are just providing support and holidays for ordinary people. Situation changed. I understand am wasting my breath here.

Bearfrills. Wow. You are nasty. Trust me, those children would appreciate iPad or mobile more, or a new pair of jeans. Of course they will smile, those blankets are gorgeous. But a child from Syria actually needs one to keep warm, not to admire. And yes, you are talking to somebody who was living in the country at the time of Chernobyl disaster, ease off. Trust me, I know and I have seen enough to last me a life time. I will back off of course at your suggestion (you are very polite and charming), stay in your cosy bubble. Good Luck!

I'm not at all nasty, you however are completely out of line to disrupt an otherwise lovely thread with unfounded scorn about what we're doing.

And FYI, Woolly Hugs (who run this project) also run a project that benefits refugees including children from Syria. Shockingly, people can actually care about more than one cause at a time.

Please are you employed by the Belarusian govt perhaps? Or a member of its tourist board? Can you point to anything to evidence what you are saying because the word of one anonymous unnamed poster on the internet is not enough to counter the other sources of information regarding the lasting effects of Chernobyl; and the circumstances of children today.

The children we make blankets for aren’t wholly from Belarus, there are other areas from the contaminate region that come over for respite.

Pistey and I have actually met many groups over the last 3 years. Many of these children are in remission; losing an eye, ovaries, and have had deforming growths on their faces. Quite a few of these groups have had to have a doctor travelling with them due to their health and medications.

I appreciate that there be other experiences that may be different, however we have actually looked, a support and have met the groups we know that are making a profound difference to these children.

We will not apologise for that.

When I read it my first instinct was to throw my hook in the air. Then I stopped and thought about it. I came to a conclusion:

  1. I know that K & P wouldn't knowing involve Woolly Hugs in something that wasn't required.

  2. I saw the pictures of the children who received a hug last year. Their faces were pure joy.

I won't be giving up hooking after all, and there will be love in every stitch!

The thing is, even if it is the case that these children aren't necessarily coming from poverty, they are children who have suffered from cancer. We make blankets for ill children in the UK; we don't ask for bank statements and parental income declarations from them before sending blankets. Why would we not consider the Belarusian children visiting the UK equally deserving?

The blankets are not expensive to make - Stylecraft Special is pretty cheap. Even a whole blanket costs me about £20 to make. I really don't see the problem with giving a beautiful, inexpensive gift that brings joy to a child who has suffered from a horrible illness.
