We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

So, squares can be any pattern, as long as using stated yarns, and one of the two specified sizes?
Then where are they sent?

They are children. For me there is no further debate needed. I have made squares. I am making squares, I will make squares. For children.

3EyedRaven · 26/01/2018 23:26

Thanks @stitchit

KnottyAndPistey · 27/01/2018 00:41

Thanks, lovelies.

We’ve met most of the groups coming over. We’ve seen them on their arrival, their astonishment at receiving a blanket.

These are gorgeous children who would thrive beyond the contaminated area of Chernobyl.
A trip here boosts immunity and for many extends their life.
TBH , It makes no difference if they are impoverished, so called prompted and prepared; we’ve met so many of these kids and we bloody know that what they need is respite, love and compassion.

That is what we do.

I’ll be back tomorrow should anyone what to explain any further why we shouldn’t do this- and it will need to be a very good argument.

We know these blankets give comfort and make a difference.

TBH it’s upsetting to have to qualify that.

You shouldn't have to qualify it Flowers

PS: wool arrived today, thank you lovely WH crew x

KnottyAndPistey · 27/01/2018 08:25

Morning lovely crew, Pistey here this time. All Knots says is true, we know these blankets bring comfort, they are full of love and compassion for these kids. End of. Children are visited at home before and after by the charity, they keep in touch. What they do makes a difference. How fantastic.

Yes to the photos from last year, Knots and I were there obvs. Magical. No apologies for this.

After last year we gave up asking for extras/ice cream funds on mn after that goady bun fight where it was suggested Knots and I were going on hollibobs with the proceeds. Ffs!! But yet upsetting too. Many many eye rolls.

If you would like to make squares for blankets for these children please do. We need equivalent about 12,000 six inchers!

And Witchdancer definitely no throwing of crochet hooks! You’ll have someone’s eye out Grin

I just had to pop on here ( though away on holiday)
It has so annoyed me that K&P are even having to defend themselves.
I have no idea what the poster was hoping to achieve ?
More love and compassion is needed in this world, not divisiveness.
I'll be carrying on with these, along with the others close to my heart

SusanWalker · 27/01/2018 10:09

I don't see the wealth or poverty of the children as relevant. Blankets have been made for all sorts of people regardless of financial circumstances.

Even if these children themselves aren't suffering from cancer they will have parents, grandparents or extended family who are. Not to mention friends. And that's enough reason as far as I'm concerned.

I'm about to have the first two hours of me time for weeks and weeks. So am going to watch silent witness and start on a square.

WitchDancer · 27/01/2018 10:12

The cat has learned to duck flying hooks but I'll be refraining....mainly because I've got a square in progress. 😁

Shame on you Pleasecheckfacts
How dare you come in here and practically telling us we shouldn't be kind & generous to whomever we choose? These children need a break and giving them a gift, made with love, means so much to them.
How bloody dare you dirty that?
Take your vile bile and hatred elsewhere

RubyLennoxExists · 27/01/2018 12:11

12000 6 inchers, with say 1200 stitches in each - by my calculations that's 14.4 million stitches Shock
So with love in every one of those 14.4 million, that's an awful lot of love going out into the world. Smile

BlackeyedSusan · 27/01/2018 12:24

FFS. Stressed exhausted hooking does not aid counting.
Ah well, as long as it is square on the outside Blush

Jux · 27/01/2018 13:31

Someone suggested you were stealing donations?!!!!!!!! OMG. I doubt very much anyone actually believed them. So sorry to hear you both had to put up with that. Does that mean we can't pop extras in like kast year? I couldn't do it kast year, but had set something by for this year. Can I not do it now?

Spindelina · 27/01/2018 14:01

I don’t think it’s bad to be skeptical about to whom you give time or money. There will always be some people who abuse others charity and generally take the piss.

But I trust K, P and ilove to have judged this project. Many people in that part of the world were (are?) caught up in conflict not of their making, which has had a lasting impact, not solely in monetary terms. If a blanket (which I’ve enjoyed making, incidentally) puts a smile on someone’s face, then that’s good with me.

One down. Just half the peskies to go. I Wii eventually make the equivalent of a whole blanket, though it may take several years of chernobs!

Jux · 27/01/2018 15:34

Good idea, Stitchit, I'll do that. But I have some Body Shop type stuff too. If WH can't take it, then I'll give it to a local charity shop instead.

What sort of things without think would be useful for the boys in the groups? Horribly stereotypical of me but I think teen/preteen girls are easier to buy for as there are lots of sets in the shops of nail varnish, lip gloss, hair clips, etc that can be separated out but I'm not sure what to get for the boys? My boys are 7yo and 3yo so into slime, fidget toys, and Nerf.

Jux · 27/01/2018 16:20

I'm always tempted to give boys books! Not appropriate this time. I don't know, what about football cards, (or Dr Who, or Star Wars?). I imagine they have Amazon and iTunes absolutely everywhere, so maybe voucher type things? My brothers were both into guitarists from pre-teen, as was dh. Hendrix particularly. Are there people like that around?
