We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

It's DC Stichit, and it's a terrible, in shadow photo so I'm not surprised you can't make out the detail!
Yes it definitely has a very different feel to knitted yarn. I'm a big fan of the feel of moss stitch though, which also yields quite a firm texture.

Lovely to see familiar names on this thread - chipping helped me last year when I was just starting out and bear I remember your lovely girl in her leg warmers

First square is done, second one nearly there. Stash isn't big enough for a whole blanket, reckon I can get 5 or 6 squares so I can place an order after payday.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/01/2018 20:43

guess who is able to post again!😂

I'll be making a few 6 inchers❤

TwitterQueen1 · 21/01/2018 21:47

Any guidance on number of knitting stitches for a 12 in square? I've spent around 5 hours today and got nowhere..... 1st attempt - my casting on method (knit and slip onto needle) resulted in untidy mess so I unravelled. Numerous attempts at long-tailed resulted in 1st finger loop I cannot get rid of for every stitch. Third attempt using slip stitch to cast on took forever on second row and I ended up with way too may stitches despite lots of measuring... so I've unravelled again....

Bearfrills · 21/01/2018 21:50

For crochet I do around 55-65 stitches to get a 12" square, depending on tension, hook size, and pattern.

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/01/2018 21:50

Thanks for the PM K&P. I'm in.

I don't know if I can commit to a whole blanket yet, but I'll do a few squares and see how I go.

WitchDancer · 21/01/2018 22:36

Twitter I do about 35 for a 6 inch

RubyLennoxExists · 22/01/2018 07:02

Twitter I do 30 stitches for 6 inches. My cast on row always looks a bit loose to start with but is ok by the time I've finished the square. Plus I hate knitting the first row after the cast on because there's so little stretch at that stage. (Despite the loose looking cast on).
Maybe start with 6" inch squares, which might feel less daunting than a 12 inch? I'm going to do 6 inches with the ones I'm planning to crochet as I'm new to that.

K&P I was torn between laughing & crying. I chose laughing but it was a close run thing. It’s good to be home x

DropZone. Nice to see you again too!

Woollybackswife. How’s your shoulder now? Still not good?!

RubyLennoxExists. Personally I found granny’s squares WAY easier than what you’re doing and CTC (corner to corner) is really quite rewarding too. It took me a little while to get it sorted, but once I did I was off! (I discovered I was inadvertently twisting it when I changed direction...some of my early attempts were a sight to behold!

Zing hello my lovely. Great to ‘see you’ x

Big hugs & waves to all 😊

TheWoollybacksWife · 22/01/2018 23:41

Blimey Chipping you've got a good memory! I had surgery on my shoulder at the end of the summer and it is brilliant now. I have to be careful - doing too much crochet seems to cause it to stiffen up. Thank you for asking Grin

Treasures · 23/01/2018 01:51

@PurpleFrog thank you for letting me know it's Fuchsia Purple, not Pink You're quite appropriately named for my query Grin

Treasures · 23/01/2018 02:14

@ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs Here's a pic of my Sophie blanket as requested (I should point out, this is for me, not Chernobyl) There is a bit more of it to do, but I'm quite tempted to leave it as it is. It needs blocking, hence wobbly edges.
I don't know if you remember me from last year, I learnt to crochet specifically to join Woolly Hugs last March. Think I can safely say I know most of the different stitches now. This blanket was a really good lesson! And far easier than it looks because of the amazing tutorials.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/01/2018 09:02

TheWoollyBacksWife I’m pleased to hear its much better 😊 but it’s a shame too much crochet makes it stiffen up. It always seems completely unfair when great crafters get injuries or ‘worn out parts’ that make doing their craft really difficult.

Treasures of course I remember you 😊 I think it’s very safe to say you can crochet now! It looks fab! It looks great as it is, but I do love the border of the pattern too... I assumed it was for you & I don’t blame you for keeping it, there’s a LOT of work in it!

RubyLennoxExists · 23/01/2018 09:36

Chipping are Granny squares quicker because there are more holes in them - quicker than backwards and forwards DC for example?
I'm going to practice half trebles (?) today. What other techniques/ stitches do I need got a bogstandard square?

RubyLennoxExists · 23/01/2018 09:37

Treasures your blanket is beautiful, ver impressive

RubyLennoxExists · 23/01/2018 09:37

Very not ver Blush

Stuffofawesome · 23/01/2018 09:48

just ordered some wool I'm in

DropZoneOne · 23/01/2018 14:57

Ruby simple granny squares use treble crochet (UK term) - depending on your tension if you're doing a 6" square using a 4mm hook and DK yarn you only need 6-7 rounds. That stitch and the gaps mean they crochet really quickly, even for a beginner.

Have a look at Bella Coco on you tube for her basic granny. She guides you through it from start to finish, very easy to follow.

Spindelina · 23/01/2018 17:48

The other thing that makes granny squares quick is that you insert your hook through a huge great gap (instead of into a stitch like you do if you are doing rows of trebles), so your aim doesn’t need to be as careful.

Treasures that blanket is stunning. You have inspired me to try new stitches.

I'm fairly new to Mumsnet I'll join in.
