We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

I'm on what'll probably be my last couple of squares. Anything else I can pop in the parcel that would be helpful?

Jux · 27/03/2018 20:44

Oh they're all so wonderful! Especially yours bookbook and flutterworc

Jux · 27/03/2018 20:46

I love the way No. 15 has draped, like waves

Jux · 27/03/2018 20:56

I have just started going through my squares and checking colours (not all are Chernobyl or even Candy's) and I have found a whole stash I did some time ago... it's going to be a small packet not a letter Blush. I'm sorry, K&P but I can't do the joining as yet - will practise, but a whole blanket is a bit heavy to hold, and I'm going through a clumsy phase atm, with small tremors.

bookbook · 27/03/2018 22:23

Mhw that looks fab - have you the pattern for the top left square?
The drape is lovely on 15 , I agree !
aw, thanks Jux - Blush . Poor you with your hands though - it must be so hard to cope with , don't push yourself .
I have been plodding on with simple one colour squares for our second blanket, but I have an enforced wait for emergency wool supplies for the last two .
So I decided to enjoy myself with some colour tonight :)

bookbook it's Polly Plum's Maybellene square on ravelry. Where are your patterns from? That blanket is stunning!

bookbook · 27/03/2018 23:32

Thanks Mhw - Polly Plum does some beauties - I know Spin has recommended some too :)
My fabulous DD (flutterworc) did the 3 really gorgeous flower ones in the middle :) - I'll ask about those .
Bottom right is mine - a simple solid granny with a centre embellishment
added ( a fiendish pattern which I gave up on about round 6 , but refused to frog! )
Bottom right is mine too -

Mhw - here are the patterns she used. :) (They were all free when she did them , not sure why one of them is now to purchase) .

Glorious photos!

Hope things improve for you soon Jux x

PurpleFrog · 28/03/2018 10:57

Like ThursdayNextIsMyHero I prefer doing patterns that don't require much counting when I am crocheting blankets and 12" squares. I want something I can do in front of the telly, and I don't want the pesky:area ratio to be too large! Grin

I have been looking at Ravelry to see if I can find some new patterns which fit the bill for 12" squares, but haven't found anything yet.

Jux · 28/03/2018 11:09

PurpleFrog, yes, I'm like that, especially with the peskies! Sometimes I'll just change a pattern from multi-coloured to single coloured so I don't have to deal with peskies.

ThursdayNext, I love Jasper Fforde. He's so clever!

Spindelina · 28/03/2018 11:13

I’m right down the Polly Plum rabbit hole at the moment!

PurpleFrog · 28/03/2018 11:55

I saw a really nice self-coloured large square on one of the Woolly Hugs pics recently, but I can't find the photo now. I searched for it at the weekend on both Mumsnet and Facebook but couldn't find it. Sigh!

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/03/2018 12:36

It wasn't the bright green one I did was it Purple? This one? That's the Spring Fling square from Crochet Amore but I had to fudge it as the pattern is written for thicker yarn. I did the middle pattern and squared it off then just trebles round the and round until it was the right size. I added a row of eyelets just for a bit of interest.

PurpleFrog · 28/03/2018 12:38

Woolly - yes it was! Well done! I'll look that one up right away before I lose it again. Smile

PurpleFrog · 28/03/2018 12:44

Now saved in my Ravelry Library and printed out! I know the centre doesn't tick the boxes for being easy to do in front of the telly, but after that it's fine. Thanks again.

bookbook · 28/03/2018 14:05

April Moreland is good isn't she - I've done a few of hers - Mums the Word and Majesty spring to mind ( on Ravelry) . I always end up adding extra rows to bring it up to 12" :)

PurpleFrog · 28/03/2018 14:14

I've just had a look and some of the others are nice. It is amazing how different a pattern looks when done in different colour combinations.

I am a really tight hooker and I always have to do extra rounds. I have the Jan Eaton book of 6" squares and have to add at least one round, sometimes two. I used a 4.5mm hook to do my Chernobyl blanket this year and I know I should experiment to see how that works for the Jan Eaton ones.

MrsJonesAndMe · 28/03/2018 20:37

Just checking in. Some amazing blankets and squares.

I sent in 10 12", a few 6" and some other bits and bobs. Going to do some for the Snugs now as I just don't think I will have time to do anything substantial in the next two weeks - lets see! Most of my colours work for either.

KnottyAndPistey · 29/03/2018 10:10

Hola woolly chums!!

Popping this here as this our busiest thread at the mo...

An early heads up

Gin

We are hoping at least someone comes, but have decided if not we will practice cartwheeling across the floor Grin

Which it may still come to, given that there is a BAR!
