We are delighted to be introducing a new project we are calling Snugs.

We are aiming to make blankets for children ( 0-16 years) who are being looked after within the Children's Family Trust. The Children's Family Trust work with these children aiming to give them stability and security through to adulthood, helping them achieve their full potential, with the ideal being fostered within a family for life. We would like to make these children something permanent, that they can take with them wherever they are.

Initially we will be working with the group based in the 'South Central' area, so Southampton, Portsmouth, Hampshire, Surrey and Dorset.

We would love for you to help us. We have funds to help if you need yarn, many thanks to the super generous donation from Ruth in memory of her beautiful "Little Mum' Joan.

There will be extra love in the Snugs from them both.

Crafting Info

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK just this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome.
  • Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles.
  • No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don't seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Please read the list of colours in our palette carefully, the list is below.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you'd like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets to be 48 by 60 inches, we would like them all to be single bed size no matter what age the child.

The colours are a twist on a rainbow theme...

Ah I was talking normal squares - granny squares I get a couple of rounds in then get lost Grin Next time I’m in town I’ll get some yarn and a hook and have another go and let you know how I get on :)

Sorry to those of you bashing your heads against the brick wall that is the NHS. We don’t always get it right Sad.

Work is going well, thanks book. Velcro baby is starting to get the hang of sleeping in his cot, which helps DH greatly. I’ve got a double pump and a —old maternity bra with strategic holes— hands-free kit, so I need something to do with my hands for ten minutes twice a day. Don’t suppose anyone has any ideas? Grin

The yarn garden cushion pattern is lovely isn’t it? I found the blog when I was looking for leaf patterns and had a nosey around. It would work well as a little hug too.

Stitch sorry you’re feeling grotty.

lollipop the first crochet square I ever did, I realised I was increasing one stitch every row. Do you think it might be something like that? If so, I’d start with just a few stitches (six or so), decide where the six stitches of the next row go, do them, make sure you’ve got six, and repeat until you’re confident.

Just turned six months. I left the office at 2pm one Friday; he was born at 3pm the next Friday. So I went back when he was just over 25 weeks!

Spin it's not you lovely people who work for the NHS, it's the systems that are in place which must be as frustrating for you as they are for those needing the services. For instance, our son was on the surgeon's urgent list for when he came back to work in December (he was taking a long holiday from early Nov). He also had an appointment with haematology at the end of Oct and the consultant we saw made a recommendation for his surgery which she said she'd put in a letter to the surgeon. We asked how long that would take. She said that it typically took three weeks.
Three weeks to get a letter from one person to another, in the same building. That meant that it wouldn't have got to the surgeon until he was back in December by which time it would either be too late to work the recommendation (which was for surgery to take place at a smaller hospital in the Trust due to the fact that operations there are very rarely cancelled) or his surgery would've been delayed pending the surgeon's approval. Another call to the lady in complaints had the letter delivered to the surgeon the following day and two days later I took a call from the surgeon's secretary (who also deserves flowers as she was brilliant throughout) with a date and place, being the smaller hospital, for surgery.

Stitch glad you've managed to keep some food down today! How many weeks are you now?

I love how we chat away on here Grin It really is a good place!

Afternoon!
Spin - all going well then :) ( I am sooooo old, I fed both DD's until they were 6 months, then they went straight to cows milk out of a clean, but not sterilised sippy cup. It's changed a bit since then! )
Madison - glad you got DS sorted. Its so tiring being the one who has to drive everything , when really you shouldn't need to
Stitchit - hope you can keep on holding onto the food.
Managed to get another 12" done in the duck egg and storm. Time is short before I go away on Sunday

Hi. I cannot knit or crochet but would like to donate. Is wool better than cash? And if I take the OP into a wool shop, will it mean something to them - ie will they be able to easily identify what I need to buy?

Thanks

This is a lovely project. I've been knitting for refugees and candy, but just ordered new wool for this one. Had to, forced to, no escape get loads to qualify for free delivery! I think you'll understand... My DD is in care due to MH issues. I asked her what she thought of this idea, she loved it. I showed her the colours and she chose some for a small blanket for herself. It has to be small so that she can keep it with her when she is sectioned. Once I've done her small one, I'll get clicking on the rest. DD has us, living in same place and seeing her practically daily and still feels incredibly displaced and lonely. A wooly hug will make such a difference to so many in care. Thank you!

hello Jaimes - as Stitch said - I would definitely pm K&P , and they will either pair you up with a crafter , or accept the donation. Thank you - it is people like yourself who keep the wheels turning for this wonderful charity.
Tiede Flowers - and you certainly don't need to tell us about the obsession absolute necessity of yarn buying :)

Tiedie · 19/01/2018 11:44

Thank you! I took up knitting to help cope with the situation. She chose lavender, bluebell and aster. Looking forward to the wool arriving... And finding a good hiding place for itWink

OhBeggerItsMorning · 19/01/2018 14:17

Ooooooo, received my wool this afternoon, thanks. Will get down to knitting asap.

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 19/01/2018 15:11

I'd like to help please.
I need wool.
I think I have needles.
I would love to try and crochet one, I'll look at the you tube mentioned earlier. Don't have a crochet hook as can't crochet!
Can easily knit a few.
Can't see where to send a pm on phone?

It's different on my mobile - go to the categories and then look for three little lines one above the other on the top right. Click on there and I think it takes you to your Mumsnet setting. Again look for the three lines and that will take you to your inbox etc. I hope that's right!

WitchDancer · 19/01/2018 17:42

Whoops - the second time click on the little person not the three lines 😊

KnottyAndPistey · 19/01/2018 18:01
