This is a very special project to help support bereaved families at a London children’s hospice.

We have been approached by lovely MrsDV who works here asking if we can make special blankets for the bed in their Butterfly Suite (post bereavement room) so these will be used to to dress the bed with. We are so glad she did. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive and personal that together we can do for the child and their family.

Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by covering the child in bed so they look comfortable and cosy whilst sending love and a hug to their bereaved parents. Loved and looked after. Thanks

The hospice would like to have these blankets in hand for time to come so that they can be ready.

We need your help to achieve this for them, we always say love in every stitch and it will be true again this time, thank you so much if you feel you can help. Our aim is to make four single bed sized blankets, two suitable for younger children and two for older. The hospice have asked for soft colours and with a butterfly theme

If you’d like to donate funds to help us achieve this, please message us, or if you need resources to take part then do let us know. We don’t want anyone unable to take part due to cost.

Crafting info

Star We will be using Stylecraft Special DK as blankets will need to be very practical, six inch squares made using 4mm hook or needles. Knit or crochet equally welcome.

The colours…
Duck egg, grape, sage, storm, parchment, pale rose, raspberry, cloud blue, sherbert.

NB – Just these please, no blocking of squares and please knot off sturdily when changing colours or finishing, leave a good end and use a needle to sew in the peskies.

Simple squares are very welcome, but if looking for an idea for theme, these are their suggestions…

Butterflies/Hearts
Teddies, cars, toys, cats etc
Stars, leaves, feathers etc

Last posting please to be Saturday 14th October

Thank you doesn’t seem enough, but the most enormous thank you. Star Thanks

I think 3D will be fine. As long as they are firmly sewn on.
I am sure they will be Smile
I showed my colleagues the colour pallet today and they agreed they are beautiful.

I am just here to show my first butterfly attempt - it needs to go on a square obviously ~(and please ignore the spare bit of wool that is pretending its an antennae )
What are the thoughts - too bulky ?( there are two layers)
Its about 5" across , so will sit in the square okay I think

5 balls of wool arrived today (in their lovely Wool Warehouse bag!) I really should be doing housework/cutting grass this afternoon but I can think of something better to fill my time.

diamantegal · 15/09/2017 13:55

If there's any pink/purple going I'll have a bit please - I've got Duck Egg and a bit of Parchment but could do with some contrasting colours.

No worries if not though, I can easily stick with plainer squares - better it goes to someone who hasn't got any!

Spindelina · 16/09/2017 15:54

I'm waiting for a Deramores order, but having thought I had none of these colours, I found a bit of sherbet at the bottom of my box - yay! I've done a star, which just needs a row of trebles to make it up to 6".

I think you're going to end up with more than four blankets worth of squares! 😁

I can't do anything practical so can't contribute I'm afraid. I just wanted to say that as a parent who unfortunately has experience of the Butterfly Suite (and I don't know if more than one hospice uses the name or if it was the same one) what a wonderful thing you are all doing. Thank you on behalf of the families who will see and use these blankets.

Lovely square Spin
I have just placed my Deramores order - decided to take advantage of the 30% off to order extra and some of the new Chernobyl colours too. :)
Chipping - lovely to see you, how are you?
Youcan - no words for you , just Flowers -and with the hope the blankets give some comfort .
I have done a couple of knitted squares as I do like to knit some textures. Will have a think on what others to do next

youcan. I'm very sorry you've had cause to be familiar with the Butterfly Suite 🦋💐. There are a few of them, but I'm not sure how many would be classed as London.

It's lovely if you want to just hang out & chat & see the squares being done 😊 - but if you want to learn to knit or crochet there are plenty of us who would be only too happy to help you. We've converted loads of people over the years!

bookbook. It's lovely to see you too. I've missed everyone. I've sent you a PM.

MadisonAvenue · 17/09/2017 08:57

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/09/2017 13:58

Madison

Hi & thank you, it's nice to have been missed, I've missed you all too🌷

Life has been a bit much of late. When life is like that I tend to go & hide down at the back of my cave & it takes something very special to drag me out again. MrsDV & Billie are the ultimate definition of 'something very special', so here I am 🦋💕

It's so very, very wrong that these blankets are needed, but sadly I can't change that, I can, however, knits & crochet lots of love & hugs into a squares for a blanket that might help a little bit.

Scaredparent · 17/09/2017 14:11

Hospices are such a over looked place, until you have a loved 1 in there you just don't understand the hard work & love in those places

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 18/09/2017 10:36

scaredparent Hospices are amazing places, filled with incredible people, arent they. I've only experienced adults in them, but they helped us so very, very, much. If you want to talk, we're here.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 18/09/2017 10:39

Morning, I am back knitting squares after a fairly crappy few months and will hoik out some of these colours and get going

MadisonAvenue · 18/09/2017 11:17

Chipping FlowersI totally understand that. You do what you have to do, lovely. It's always lovely to see your name appear on here though. Take care!

I agree, it's so sad that these blankets are needed. Hospices are such incredible places, as are the wonderful people who work in them.

Five so sorry to see that you've not been having an easy time Flowers
