Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

No, I resisted the sock pigs, I was keen to get the wool selections but by the time they came up I'd already spent too much and DH pointed out I could buy 6 balls of wool for the price. I'll take that as encouragement to buy lots of wool Grin

VittysCardigan · 27/03/2017 18:44

Maybe we could organise a peg swap - we must have all the colours between us. It could be a woolly hugs version of Pokemon or Panini football stickers GrinGrin

MrsDilligaf · 27/03/2017 19:30

Right...the madness has to stop...

Two balls of wool and a pattern were puchased on Saturday to make DD a cardigan.

A further 4 balls were purchased today to make her 2 more.

So in total we have Candy's Hugs squares underway, Chernobyl squares, a blanket for DD and 3 cardigans.

I've had to promise myself that I won't buy anymore till next month.

Grin
TheWoollybacksWife · 27/03/2017 20:16

Good luck with that MrsD Grin

I'm waiting for one of my DDs to move out so I can have a whole room for my stash. I have to say neither of them are cooperating in this plan. I may have to withdraw all mothering Shock DH has suggested that when they both leave we could downsize Shock no chance - I'll have one room for knitting projects and one room for crochet my sewing machine can go in DS's room

MadisonAvenue · 27/03/2017 20:37

Just give in to it MrsD Grin Resistance is futile.

I would love a craft room. We actually have the ideal room in our guest bedroom but it has to be kept as that for mother in law's stays Hmm

I've almost finished a plain 12" granny square, just one more round to go, so that'll be four I have towards my next parcel being sent in time for the deadline.

TheHatOfDoom · 27/03/2017 21:18

I knitted a plain garter square. It's come out a couple of inches too small and not exactly square (it stretches to square though). What do we reckon, crochet a border up to size or abandon it?

NormansNipple · 27/03/2017 21:38

DoubleR I think that means you have his blessing to buy at least 6 balls, maybe even 8? Grin

Vittys that would be ace! But in true sticker style we would all have lots of the Forbidden Colours, and maybe mustard, and not a single lipstick yarn peg would be seen anywhere...

MrsD your project list sounds as long as mine. At least your DD is small and cute and it doesn't take much wool to knit her a cardigan
Smile

Woolly and Madison My wool is in a big pile on the dining table. I would also love a craft/stash room but I have no space I have been thinking of buying a pouffe/footstool for a while, I have decided to get one with storage! Then I will try to limit myself on yarn so it all fits inside. Although I do have a big boot on the car, I could also put some there...

TheWoollybacksWife · 27/03/2017 21:47

Norm until my DDs see the light I have some storage under the stairs and one of these where I keep my current projects. It is very roomy and I can put my feet up on it too Grin

bookbook · 27/03/2017 22:41

Evening

just managed to finish a c2c 12" in plum.
No chance tomorrow - have DGS and a committe meeting in the evening.
Norm - I am doing the border round them too , it does make them look nice ( and being remarkably lazy, doing the border in the same colour of a single colour square = only 1 peskie, as I can work in one while doing the border :). It will probably be multi coloured granny squares from now - I don't think I have enough of any one colour to do another in one colour ( maybe apart from the deaded mustard or gold .. )
When my younger DD moved out, we decorated the bedroom to be a guest bedroom, so the chest of drawers is my wool stash, and the bookcase cupboard combo is my other craft stuff- books, patterns, spare material etc. However - I also have a bursting WIP bag next to my chair, a spare bag of wool - and another bag waiting to start a Little Hug when Chernobyl wool runs out/deadline looms .....

WitchDancer · 27/03/2017 23:22

Hat a couple of inches is quite a lot so I think I would do a border, but only if you have the time

I need to learn how to do a border next!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 28/03/2017 08:28

Morning!

My yarn stash is taking up most of the bottom of the toy cupboard and some of it has spilled over into my wardrobe...Blush

I saw an amazing thing on Facebook the other day, where someone had replaced the mattress on their spare room bed with plastic storage boxes full of yarn and had then rearranged the covers over it so her DH didn't realise! Made me contemplate trying to build a spare room just so I can do the same! Grin

The cosy-stripe square is pretty much done, I just need to finish off the border after I drop DD2 to school. Will post a photo then.

Am loving all the squares, as usual!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 28/03/2017 09:35

Treasures. 😂

Malcolm. The blanket/scarf looks really lovely. Far better to do it when you don't have to rush it 😊

Loving the secret stash on the guest bed. Hopefully he won't invite anyone to stay...

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 28/03/2017 09:36

Oh & my yarn stash is on one of the sofas. It looks too pretty to move it! 😊

MadisonAvenue · 28/03/2017 11:51

Managed to finish one 12" and then start and finish another last night so I'm now just starting square six of my second batch.

My yarn is spread around. It's in a couple of pull out boxes in a couple of Ikea Expedit units and there's also a nice black lidded box I bought from Ikea which I thought would hold it all but it doesn't.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 28/03/2017 12:03

Cosy stripe square done!

I swapped out the pinks and purples so that it can be used in a boy's blanket if needs be. If I make another, I think I'll use Mustard in place of Saffron.

On to making a Coast Ripple square this afternoon!

Woolly Hug crew over HERE!! Chernobyl project 2017, our second thread
MadisonAvenue · 28/03/2017 13:16

Malc that's gorgeous!

I'm 6" into a Saffron and Lipstick granny square. I wasn't sure how the colours would work but I like it now it's growing.

Spindelina · 28/03/2017 13:27

That is lovely, Malc.

Can I have some colour suggestions? I'm doing a 12" square of 4x4 mini squares; diagonal arrangement in claret, lipstick, tomato, spice, tomato, lipstick, claret. What colour should I use for the joins? I have all the Vibrant Riot colours, and nothing else. I like lime, but I wonder if saffron is a more popular choice and would make it easier to match with other squares.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 28/03/2017 13:33

Personally, I'd go for lime, Spind. Love that colour, and it really pops! It's on the outer edge of the border in my cosy stripe square.

Or there's Empire which would also look really nice against those colours....

Shall I get my yarn pegs out?!!!! Grin

MadisonAvenue · 28/03/2017 13:54

Malc are you saying that you've actually put them away?

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 28/03/2017 14:18

Panic not, Madison, they are in a clear Tupperware box next to my WIP yarn!!!

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/03/2017 15:00

C2C experts - help please. I'm sitting waiting for DH to have a minor op and I've brought my crochet . I'm doing a C2C because the cosy stripe is mahoosive to cart round and I haven't brought my tape measure Confused. Can anyone give me an idea of the number of clusters needed for both 6" and 12" please. I may resort to asking the nurses station if I can borrow a ruler. Grin It's in Grass and it is briiiight!

TheoriginalLEM · 28/03/2017 15:07

am not sure wolly, but I know one round of clusters on my granny squares measure approx. 1 inch. So that means one cluster would be half an inch, so 24??

bookbook · 28/03/2017 15:13

quick one - Woolly - crotchet hooks are generally 6" long .
I am a loose-ish hooker, and am doing 19 clusters for a 11-11.5" and add a border to make it up to 12"

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/03/2017 15:18

Great tip about the length of a crochet hook book. It's 11 clusters wide so far and over 6" so I'm going to keep going until it's nearly two hooks wide.

bookbook · 28/03/2017 15:22

I do have a new clover one mind, and just checked it - its more 5 and 3/4" ! Old one was bang on 6" typical :)
