Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

LEM Star Looks fab!

MadisonAvenue · 26/03/2017 20:29

That looks amazing LEM - the colours and patterns that you and Mhw have used look incredible!

Mhw02 · 26/03/2017 20:29

Fabulous work, LEM! Gorgeous set of squares!

And thanks; petrol it is!

Spindelina · 26/03/2017 20:48

Yay LEM it looks great!

WitchDancer · 26/03/2017 20:58

Stunning Lem!

Okkitokkiunga · 26/03/2017 21:11

Oh wow this a lovely load of squares.

I have 'finished' my first ever square. When it's just sat there it's just under 6" but I can stretch it to 6. Should I add another row or chalk it up to learning and have another go?

Okkitokkiunga · 26/03/2017 21:12

Oh, here it is.

MadisonAvenue · 26/03/2017 21:17

Okki that's an excellent first square! If it stretches to 6" then it'll be fine. Someone who constructs the blankets (was it you MrsH?) said that they prefer them slightly smaller and stretchy rather than larger.

Okkitokkiunga · 26/03/2017 21:19

Thank you Madison. There were 4/5 attempts at starting though. Not sure how the next one is going to go. I might make it a 12" then I don't have to worry about starting another one Grin

bookbook · 26/03/2017 21:23

Evening!

  • I have had a busy day being 'mothered" :) Such fabulous squares everyone- they are going to be bowled over, no doubt ( Mhw and LEM - just wow Star's both) (did you manage a Nana nap Vitty ? ;) ) Okki -brilliant first square - I would leave it at that - as Madison says, they prefer a bit smaller. Chipping - it was only one ball.... Only now picking up hook, so no finished square tonight
VittysCardigan · 26/03/2017 21:47

Book - I did manage a very short Nana nap. He was as good as gold but I'm exhausted

BlackeyedSusan · 26/03/2017 21:51

dome some peskying. have6 squares properly finished now. one more needs a border and peskying. can not be arsed with trying to distribute 40 stitches evenly up the sides of it tonight though. I was just choosing colours of wool in bed when the light has been put out for musical beds. bodies will be redistributed to correct beds soon.

I may have ignored the brief slighlty there is definitely one square that is likely to appeal more to the female half of hte population.
and there may have been a little higlight of a non preferred colour. oops.

Treasures · 27/03/2017 02:57

Lovely work everyone.

Chipping your comment made me laugh far more than it should have! Grin

Okki yay, first square! Looks great, well done!

I've almost finished my second 12-inch square. Bit worried about some of the 6-inch ones I posted on Friday - some were definitely slightly bigger than 6 inch, I hope they'll still be usable.

NormansNipple · 27/03/2017 09:19

Okki brilliant first square!

LEM they are lovely, such a variety of patterns and colours Smile

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 27/03/2017 09:26

Thanks for thinking of me, Chipping!

I have worked on the Cosy Stripe blanket all weekend and this is the result...

A grand total of 13 stripes!!! (26 rows in all).

I'm obviously just too slow. The blanket has now been moved to my WIP pile and instead I am going to do some Attic 24 themed squares!

Sorry, K&P, I figure you'd rather have some squares that you can do something with than what is currently a rather funky scarf...!Grin

MrsHathaway · 27/03/2017 09:53

Someone who constructs the blankets (was it you MrsH?) said that they prefer them slightly smaller and stretchy rather than larger.

It wasn't me - I think it's K&P's official line! But yes, it's definitely true that it's harder to squeeze a too-big into a given space than stretch a too-small into the same space. Having said that, it's quite often that you get a mixture of 6.5" and a 5.5" and can put them next to each other to split the difference, so don't worry about it too much.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/03/2017 10:22

think it was soupy. but anyway I am sending one a bit small as it will benefit from being held in place by better behaved neighbours.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/03/2017 10:42

I said that about the size of squares. 5.5 to 6.5" is fine, any larger and they do get tricky to squeeze in. I do mine in straight rows so the large one next to a small one doesn't make a difference, I guess we all do it a bit differently.

bookbook · 27/03/2017 10:48

Morning!
I have run around like a mad thing this morning, doing needed chores ( its only 9.45 really - I hate the clock change...)
Can sit down now for a coffee and a quick few rows :)
I have parcelled up Zkids squares , Candy hugs, Little Hugs and some other bits to post off - they was getting in the way, with squares everywhere..Just a pile of Chernobyl squares left
Vitty - I know - aren't they lovely, but my DGS runs everywhere , expecting me to keep up!
Malcolm - I wouldn't try to rush, it just makes it seem harder :)
Blackeyed - better behaved neighbours Grin

NormansNipple · 27/03/2017 11:52

Malcolm I think I was doing 3-4 hours a day and it took me over 2 weeks. I did speed up though. I was doing 2 rows/1 stripe in under 40 minutes by the end. Also be warned, the edging takes a lot longer than you think.

bookbook sounds like you have been very productive! I'm just doing Chernobyl squares.

I've been adding a little border round my c2c squares and I really like it. It doesn't take too long and finishes the squares off nicely Smile

Oooh and I have good news....

NormansNipple · 27/03/2017 11:57

My full set of style craft pegs came today! In a lovely little tin.

I did make my self a full set of Candy's colours yarn pegs. As they are now redundant, if anyone would like them please let me know and I'll send them to you. At least I think it's a full set. I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong Grin

DoubleR · 27/03/2017 13:18

Oo Norman I'm about to move on to Candy's Hugs when I've finished another 12 inch for this project and I would love your pegs. I know I'm new to this part of MN though so I don't want to tread on anyone's toes if a more established Woolly Hugger would like them...

NormansNipple · 27/03/2017 15:39

Sold to DoubleR! Grin

It's ok, I thought they would be good for a newbie. I suspect the experienced huggers either have their own or don't need them. I'm very new myself, only been Woolly Hugging for a few months. It seems like ages though!

I'll PM you Smile

DoubleR · 27/03/2017 15:51

Thank you Grin and funnily enough that was said to me quite a bit during the sale too Halo

NormansNipple · 27/03/2017 16:17

Did you get a sock pig? It was all about the sock pigs! Grin I got one but not the colour I wanted. It was brutal!
