Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

VintageTeacup. If they're done with love, they'll be perfect 😊

bookbook. Sounds lovely. I'm getting nowhere quickly today, just looking at a huge pile of paperwork...sigh. I might stick it in a box and ignore it until later in the week 🤣 After all, important squares need making!

Dutchoma · 12/03/2017 12:27

Right, here comes Oma, blushing. I did not read all the instructions for the Cernobyl squares and so, when you put in for some extra ones I dived into my SSDK stash and dug out some really cheerful colours. Only later that day did I see you did not want Sunshine and not walnut either (only a little bit of that, so maybe doesn't matter).
So, the question is: what do you want me to do with the square? I can send it and you can decide whether you want it for a Chernobyl square or for something else. I can keep it here or in case you do like it I can do a couple more.
Up to you completely, sorry I did not read properly.

I will get some aster and plum and do another square anyway.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/03/2017 12:38

It's a fun square DutchOma. If it were me I'd just send it on, the colours might not be as important as getting the last ones made 😳 Otherwise it'll be great for a Refugee blanket I'm sure.

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/03/2017 12:52

we need a Spring meet-up soon.

Right. I've photographed my stash and I need some help! I think I've also got a bit of gold in another bag too. I've probably got enough for a whole blanket Blush. Should I do something in stripes? Or stick with 12" squares and if so can someone suggest some colour combos and patterns. I work with numbers - I like formulas and absolutes - I don't do creative out of my own head.

I think the colours I've got are:
Grass
Sage
Aspen
Lime
Khaki
Aster
Turquoise
Royal
Denim
Petrol
Empire
Spice
Saffron
Silver
Boysenberry
Pale Rose
Magenta
Claret
Raspberry
Violet
Grape
Emperor

Looking at that lot I think I'm off to Wilko's for some wooden pegs and a sharpie tomorrow Grin

Dutchoma · 12/03/2017 12:57

We do, Woolly. Time is going so fast.

Marcipex · 12/03/2017 13:17

Oma, your square is lovely.
I'm using Spice, Tomato and Copper. I think it would look nice next to yours :)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/03/2017 13:24

Woolly 🤣

You have a month. IF you think you can do a blanket in that time, then I think you could do a fabulous striped blanket with your stash and I'm sure someone could help you decide which order to do the colours. (Not me, I'm equally challenged in that department!!). However, it's a fair bit of pressure - 12" squares would be much less so.

Which would you pref?

flutterworc · 12/03/2017 13:25

@KnottyAndPistey I'm also defecting briefly for Chernobyl and using up some of the brighter SSDK I have, only to discover I've used verboten colours - sunshine. Is it a catastrophe? Are there any other projects you can use them for? Argh!

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/03/2017 13:33

They'll probably have a 'Verboten' bag & be able to make a blanket at then end! 😂 If not we can all send a few down & make a combined refugee blanket 😊

I'm going to make a medium sized Little Hug with colours I love that are 'verboten' for squares (Jaffa, fiesta etc) I'm sure some wee pre schooler will think it's fabulous 😎😂

NormansNipple · 12/03/2017 14:00

bookbook and LEM are those C2C squares? I really like them.

I've done a further 16 stripes of my blanket since I finished work yesterday. Only 9 more to go! I'm getting excited to see my finished blanket Grin

Is anyone else who is crocheting a lot getting a sore knuckle on their left ring finger? Mine feels bruised.

bookbook · 12/03/2017 14:50

yes Normans - I like the effect too, the ripples give it a lovely texture. I think its my favourite . I like that once you get to the diagonal centre, you have less to do, not moreGrin Mind you - I am doing a very basic granny square today for a change.. No bruised finger here - I'm a knitter (as others will know ) and I am crocheting as I knit - using my right forefinger!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/03/2017 14:59

Norman. I'm here procrastinating over my paperwork pile so I'll answer 😂 Yes they are CTC. It took me a few attempts to get it sorted - I was creating the oddest shapes! Then I realise that what was happening was that my piece was turning itself around while I was crocheting. Once I had that sorted I was good to go. As someone else said, it's a surprisingly quick square to do given its density. I think it's because you do the all of the expanding first, get half the square done then decrease, decrease, decrease so you seem to finish quickly. I still can't face doing a 12" in it though, 6" is plenty thanks, but you have more patience for repetition than me, so you'll probably do 12's no problem!

I'm so looking forward to seeing your blanket! 😊

My joints are a bit screwed, crocheting highlights that. The worst is the one in my little finger on my left hand, from keeping the tension and the top knuckle of the middle finger on my left hand is developing an unsightly bump 😕 I'm getting my mum's hands 😖😕

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/03/2017 15:06

I'm seeing the doctor about basal joint arthritis in my left thumb and issues with my left shoulder joint - both made worse by crocheting I think. I'm right handed and the problems with my left side are likely caused by tensioning the yarn.

NormansNipple · 12/03/2017 16:17

bookbook I like how colour changes come out and the little squares it makes too. I've done a lot of knitting in the past but I couldn't get the hang of putting the yarn round the hook with my right finger!

ChippingIn I love how much you live up to your user name Grin I think I'll have to look at some tutorials to get started. I'll give it a go after I've finished this blanket. I do like a downhill finish!
I'm not developing any lumps yet but my forearm is hurting now too. I don't want to slow down Sad

Woolly I suspect anything repetitive would make it worse. I think my pain is coming from gripping my work with my ring finger. I'm trying to prop my blanket up on itself as much as possible.
I don't know much about arthritis but have you tried gentle yoga type exercises and stretches? My teacher has an age concern group and they are seeing big improvements in their arthritis. Not for one moment am I suggesting that you are old enough for your age to be a concern, just sharing a thought SmileCakeBrew

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/03/2017 16:23

I'm always concerned about my age Norman Smile I do some stretching exercises for my thumb and I have some specific shoulder exercises too. It's a bugger getting dressed in the morning, but I loosen up during the day.

I like the look of yoga but haven't done anything about joining a group. I used to work with a man that swore by yoga to keep fit and supple but he also told me about the wind. Given that I follow a low carb diet I'm worried about getting a special mention on the shipping forecast if I did yoga too Grin Blush

NormansNipple · 12/03/2017 18:52

I feel your pain Woolly, I have IBS. There's actually a posture called wind relieving posture Grin I dread that one! It is all very good for your mind and body though.

Have you posted your blanket yet? I just wondered if you used royal mail or a courier service. Mine should be ready to go by the end of the week! I've ramped up the time I'm spending on it to help calm K&P's anxiety.

Spindelina · 12/03/2017 19:44

To file under "seemed like a good idea at the time".

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 12/03/2017 19:54

Spindelina - Your picture has made my day!!!!

Good Luck with all those colours (and peskies) - I can't wait to see the finished item Smile.

TheoriginalLEM · 12/03/2017 20:08

Norman - yes is c2c! i like it as it works up really quickly.

Wooly - with regards to the left hand i don't use mine other than to hold the work, i sort of do tension with my right hand but i may have said this before, im a very loose hooker!!!

So instead of peskies today i may have accidentally started another square Blush

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/03/2017 20:16

Norman I posted my blanket last weekend and it has been received at C2017 HQ - despite the mailing bag working open on its journey south 😱😱😱😱. I weighed it at home just out of curiosity and it weighed almost exactly a kilo and I think it cost about £6 to send, although I sent another parcel at the same time so now can't be sure if that was the total cost.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 12/03/2017 20:20

I think I need to respond to K&P's rallying call and get cracking with some more squares.

I been busy on other projects recently so the squares have been somewhat neglected.

I'm delighted to have made an Angel Hug for a bereaved family at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. I have crocheted several blankets and squares over the past year but this project was a very special one to take part in. There's just a bit of finishing off to do and then it'll be in the post.

I have also just finished a couple of octopuses for the Bliss premature baby appeal. I'd never heard of it until my DD asked me to take part. She's a staff nurse over in Calderdale and their local Special Care Baby unit uses these octopuses to comfort premature babies. Apparently the babies reach out and and hold the tentacles which makes them feel safer as it reminds them of holding the umbilical cord in the womb. Research has shown how the act of holding the tentacle can calm and sooth a premature baby.

There's some information and a pattern here if anyone would like to have a look. The Octopuses are used at hospitals across the country.

I'm rather in love with Olly and Octavia Octopus!!!

Anyhow I really need to get back to my Chernobyl squares so I'll go and sort out some more yarn and rejoin you happy hookers.

Fairy I've seen those octopuses on facebook before. They're great, aren't they? So many different woolly projects doing lovely things in the world.

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/03/2017 20:36

Fairy fab octopuses octopi crocheting. Grin

bookbook · 12/03/2017 20:36

A quick dip in before I am off to finish another square.
Woolly - I took it very safe, and stared off with sage/pomegranate/aster, which seem to work nicely together.
I then got grape and saffron.....
and yesterday I got more saffron, along with claret and turquoise.
I am actually really liking saffron at the moment, and have edged some joined up 6" squares with it, to cheer them up a bit. When I've done this one, I will take a picture of them all, before I parcel up and send them off, it may help....
Chipping Woolly and Norman - we are all creaking...
(Mind you - I have had a really bad neck since Christmas, and thought I was going to have to stop knitting - one of the reasons I started crotchet. But...fingers crossed its eased and all because I have twisted my chair just a tweak.- I used to have a chair that swivelled, which I changed last year. I have been knitting/crotcheting while having to angle my neck by a mere fraction to watch the television in the new chair. Weird eh?
Spindelina - Grin have you got to the point when you think 'darn it, I'm pulling this out, it will be quicker to do something else" ?
Fairy - I feel a bit odd here - are you me? when this Chernobyl is over, I am going onto angel hugs , as I have a lot of lovely white baby wool, and am doing a Little Hug too. And the octopus - my dear sister in law sent me the link to it. !!

Spindelina · 12/03/2017 20:40

book in amongst the reasons for posting that photo, other than to keep you amused, is a little bit of accountability! I have to finish it now...

(though I am going to start something a little more portable to put in my bag for tomorrow first!)
