Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Maybe I'll try it at some point Chipping but at the moment I'm having too much fun knitting. I've given up for the night now but tomorrow's project is to finish an Easter owl for the fair. Once that's done I can feel a simple 12 inch coming on in Saffron

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/02/2017 00:07

I have just the thing for that Witch 😎

bookbook · 23/02/2017 08:46

Morning!
I am doing another Candys hugs, then back to doing one for this . Just have to decide whether to be brave and do a crotchet one, which is quicker,( it would be a c2c I think in those colours from before in stripes) or knitting, as I don't have to concentrate as hard! :)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/02/2017 09:31

I keep seeing things I want to try - I have several 'on the go'. A CTC, a Spiral, a crochet 12" whole, a crochet 12" in parts, a knitted 12" and some easy Granny squares. It's far too easy with crochet to park one thing and start another 😂

NormansNipple · 23/02/2017 09:39

There are some beautiful squares on here! I've committed to making a whole blanket! Shock I don't know what possessed me, but I'm enjoying it Grin

Madison that cake looks incredible. You have to let us know where you got it. I'm sure they will appreciate the extra custom when they're suddenly inundated with crocheting and knitting customers!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 11:25

Oooh, Spring Fling you say?!

Agree entirely re the Aster - going to make much more use of it in my next square!

Am still trying to finish off my Marigold Square. It was only 8.5" when finished, so I have found a pattern from my borders and edging book and am working my way through that! Hoping to finish it off in a bit

MadisonAvenue · 23/02/2017 14:29

A 12" I've just completed

I love that Madison

Here's my latest 12" square

@KnottyandPistey - you have a PM Smile

bookbook · 23/02/2017 22:07

Evening!
They are lovely Madison and Vitty -
I finished mine. Crotchet is certainly quick for 12" :) I am a slight bit daft though - I had it worked out for the stripes of how wide to do them and miscounted- one pomegranate square in the corner ! I can't decide whether it would be better to unpick that and make it blue. But my maths head says no :)

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 22:19

Wow, everyone's beautiful 12" squares are putting me to shame! I'm still plodding along with Madame Marigold. I knew it would come up smaller because I'm using a 4mm hook instead of the 5mm hook it was written for, but it was only 8.5" when I'd finished!

So I decided to try one of the borders from my new borders and edgings book as I've been dying to have a go. Well, I only went and got muddled up and ended up doing the one I'd originally chosen and then discounted because it was too hard - but I didn't realise until I was past the point of no return!

Anyway, I eventually finished it, front loop trebles and folding singles and all - and it still only measures 10"!!!! So I've just added a row of plain doubles/trebles and have just begun on the final row of single to finish it off.

I shall know for next time!!!

I want to do one with book's colours! (BTW, my vote is to stick with the one red square in the corner!).

bookbook · 23/02/2017 22:32

that sounds like gobble de gook to me there Malcolm- front loop trebles and folding singles Confused - I am still on Bella coco - will keep the square - DD agrees with you
I have ordered the Jan Eaton book from the library .. its not arrived yet, obviously!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 06:31

To be honest, book it was gobbledegook to me too- which is why i decided not to do it! Then I got distracted and when I went back, started the wrong one! There was much swearing and use of You Tube when I realised what I'd done!!!

Spindelina · 24/02/2017 07:31

Malcolm I finished my Marigold pattern last night, so it's my turn to do a border. I think I'm going to do a round of Vs and then a round of plain crochet (UK trebles?) and then maybe a round of wide Vs and then see where I am.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 07:33

Spindelina, how big was yours when you'd finished? Mine was 8.5", so I needed to add quite a lot of border (and then managed to do the wrong one so it's taken me AGES!).

Spindelina · 24/02/2017 09:28

Mine's about the same I think.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 09:43

I like the sound of your borders better than mine, I think they'll look nicer. Can't wait to see the finished result!

Spindelina · 24/02/2017 10:36

I don't have a book of borders, so I'm just making it up with stitches from the pattern! It's my fourth ever square, and it looks OK - fairly sure I haven't got 12 stitches in the first few rounds but managed to get the right number by round 3.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 14:47

It's finished and measures 12". Phew!

Going to do one in brighter colours next but will possibly do a different border!

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
VittysCardigan · 24/02/2017 15:02

I love that Malcolm what pattern is it?

PurpleFrog · 24/02/2017 15:08

Lovely square, Malcolm, but too many colour changes for me! I definitely have a low threshold for the maximum number of ends per square foot I am prepared to deal with! Grin

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 15:09

Okay, I need some opinions re colours!

Here are 12 different colours for the 12 rounds of the Marigold, from top to bottom is inside outwards, if that makes sense?

I wanted to deliberately put brighter colours next to contrasting shades rather than graduating out as I did with the previous one.

What do you all think? Too much?!

Book note the Aster/Pomegranate/Sage combo in the middle! 😉

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 15:12

Vittys it's the Marigold Square. I'll find a link and post it after I get back from the school run. Someone suggested it upthread. The border is from a book with a row of trebles and doubles added at the end because it still wasn't big enough!

Purple, I worked them in as I went, but is it a hideous faux pas for me to admit that I like sewing in ends?!!!!

VittysCardigan · 24/02/2017 15:14

Lol - I think I might have mentioned it - can't believe I didn't recognise it! Im such a dope- thank you for offering- yours looks really good

VittysCardigan · 24/02/2017 15:17

Malcolm- me again SmileI think the colours look great. Can't wait to get my new delivery
