Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

They are lovely Fairy - I love making baby jackets. I come from a wide ranging family, and make one for each new arrival, so I usually do 2 or 3 every year :) One is about to be started in a couple of weeks .
Right I have finished ( slowly as I am a learner ) 4 x 6" crotchet squares .
Have done 2 x 12" knitted ones , and about to cast on another tonight.

Ooh I love the colours, book. I'm a bit worried mine aren't bright enough. I'm going to do a Marigold square and have chosen the Classic colour way from the Kinship Hugs palette as I thought I could get a good mix of purples, blues and greens in there so it wasn't too gender-specific. DS1 said he'd be happy with the colours (he's 17) but I wonder if I should double check before starting?

Hmmmm....

MrsHathaway · 20/02/2017 22:29

Have a look at last year's blankets for colour decisions. If you can see the colours in a boy's blanket and a girl's blanket then you can be comfortable that they're neutral. If you think they are more one way than the other then I understand that that's also fine. It would only be an issue if you thought you were combining an ultragirly colour with an ultraboyish colour in a single square, which then theoretically wouldn't fit in either a boy's blanket or a girl's blanket.

A bright fruit-colours blanket would be properly unisex; pinks and purples - despite our right-on credentials - wouldn't be.

bookbook · 20/02/2017 22:44

Thank you Malcolm they are Pomegranate, Sage and Aster.
I have a ball of Denim to start the next one with.
I found it really hard to choose colours that would be gender neutral and to exclude the ones mentioned . I was stood in front of the display for ages . A minefield :) I decided on Aster as well to make a couple of specific boys one as well ( just as a little nod to my lovely DGS ).

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 21/02/2017 07:02

Hmmm perhaps I will have a rethink and go for brighter, more unisex colours, as my square is probably going to be more girly than neutral - the blues are more muted than bright as I tried to graduate the colours from green, to blue, to purple.

Which means getting all my yarns out and having a play around !

Or should I do two squares of the same pattern, one in bright colours for a boy and one in more muted colours for a girl? Decisions, decisions!

SpaghettiMoon · 21/02/2017 07:15

Malcolm - I'm using the classic colour scheme for an entire blanket so your squares will be fine!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 21/02/2017 07:48

Thanks, Spaghetti! I shall carry on as I was then and do my next square with the brighter colours

bookbook · 21/02/2017 17:45

I am very bad normally at colours - and totally cautious , so I am so happy that it may be considered worthy of inspiration Malcolm ( Mind you - my two grown up DDs - one loves pink/purple/pastels , the other loves deep jewel like colours , sapphire, emerald and ruby so its hard for me to determine sometimes what is 'girly' ! )
I am plodding on with a 12" , up to about 7 " so far , but I have had a busy day as housework and allotment needed some attention , and I am out at a committee meeting tonight, so reduced hours here today. And out all day tomorrow too.
Things are just getting in the way of some serious knitting time Grin

MadisonAvenue · 21/02/2017 19:57

book I love those colours!
I'm having my crochet time eaten into too. My husband's decided, at the last minute, to book tomorrow off work so that we can spend some time doing something nice with our younger son....who is nearly 17 and wants to spend his half term sleeping late, playing X Box, watching TV and checking football websites rather than being dragged around a museum with his parents.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 21/02/2017 22:43

Madison, I have a 17-year old son, too. I can imagine his reaction to being taken round a museum instead of being allowed to stay at home and play his Xbox! There was mutiny last year when I asked him to accompany me and the younger children to a National Trust place...!

Today I have been working on a Marigold square. I've got up to round 10 and am really enjoying it. It's such a lovely pattern and I'm fine with it being in US terms, amazingly. Can't wait to get it finished off tomorrow and do another one!!! Book I love the Aster too, I'm going to use that together with the Sage and Pomegranate because they looked so gorgeous when you put them together and maybe some Saffron too? Will have a play about with yarns tomorrow. The only thing I'm struggling with is that there just aren't enough hours in the day to do all the crocheting I want to!

bookbook · 21/02/2017 22:58

Evening!

  • I have managed to finish the next 12" . This one is in Denim - not sure the photo does the colour justice, its more blue than grey. I am really chuffed that you like my colours. ! I chose them to be gender neutral and bright at the same time . I only chose 4 colours .( I was donated every colour for the Candys hugs from a very generous donor, ) - so I tried to chose a few different ones myself for Chernobyl. I am going to do a couple of 6" for Candy's next, for a rest ! Good luck for tomorrow Madison - your DH is an optimistic soul, obviously Grin

WitchDancer · 21/02/2017 23:07

That looks great Book. I love that stitch!

bookbook · 21/02/2017 23:21

Its a nice pattern , so thank you! - typical me though Witch - I know I should stop at 10 o clock, I always go wrong, but I was knitting quickly to get it finished, and ended up doing 2 extra rows in between the change over, right near the end , while I was watching the tv and not concentarting , so had to go and take it back!

WitchDancer · 21/02/2017 23:42

Oh no! That's just not on you know

MadisonAvenue · 22/02/2017 02:06

I love that pattern book

I've finished a 12" square tonight with a lot of treble crochet and now I'm 8" into a 12" granny square.

Malcolm funnily enough, the almost 17 year old didn't hesitate to say yes when we were planning a family holiday to California last year. Strange that. Our 20 year old will come anywhere with us, but then he's a uni student and is guaranteed a free meal so I think that may have something to do with it.
Yep, husband's definitely optimistic. I think he's downgraded his plans to going out for breakfast, but even that's asking a lot of a kid who usually gets up at 2pm. I can see it ending up being a quick trip out for coffee late afternoon.

bookbook · 22/02/2017 09:06

Madison - its sooo easy ( which is why I went wrong - isn't that always the case? ) - it was one Witch posted on Candys thread, and I thought it would knit up nicely for a 12" - it looks effective :)
Enjoy today then . Had to smile at you saying the 20 year old would go anywhere. I suspect a late Brunch for the 17 . They don't change much!

SpiralArchitect · 22/02/2017 16:00

Lovely squares, everyone!

Here are my latest batch...It feels like a drop in the ocean though, when you consider that 70 blankets are the equivalent of 1400 12" squares Shock

I love the blue one Spiral, lovely colour and pattern.

That amount would be loads for one person but many hands make light work! Does anyone know how many have been done?

MadisonAvenue · 22/02/2017 17:46

Spiral they really are lovely!

I'm also wondering how many squares have been made. I need to have a count here.

We ended up going out for coffee and cake at the lovely tea room we went to a week or so ago. I had a very naughty coffee and walnut cake. Huge amount of coffee flavoured cream. It was nice to just sit and chat actually.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
SpiralArchitect · 22/02/2017 20:34

Witch the blue one is Spring Fling, hooked in Aster. It really is a lovely shade of blue.

Madison I am so Envy of your coffee cake. Very naughty indeed!

WitchDancer · 22/02/2017 21:01

Almost makes me want to start crotchet, but not quite!

SoupDragon · 22/02/2017 21:37

Go on go on go on go on.... you know it makes sense to become a hooker!

Evening!
Aster is my favourite blue in this range, and that is just beautiful Spiral
I have been practising c2c today - have been out all day, but had to sit and wait in the car for DH for quite a while, so did well over half a 12" square ( but as its some odd DK, it's going to the refugee appeal) . Thats so I can get some more done for Chernobyl. I bought enough wool to do 8 x12 ", have done 4 so far , so may try to do some extra - they do need a lot!
Madison - yum!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 22/02/2017 22:59

Madison. 😂 at DH taking the day off to 'do something nice with DS'. Bless his little cotton socks. You'll have to PM me the name of the Tea Shop & town it's in, I feel a weekend away coming on! Honestly, it's DIRE around here.

I have all of the Vibrant Riot colours. I do not need more yarn. But some of the other colours are just sooooo lovely...

Witch. I've knitted since I was child (very on & off), I started crocheting about a fortnight ago. I love doing it! It's much more interesting & 'fun' I think. It's easier to frog, easier to make it colourful etc. You can just 'do' so much more with it & it's compact to take places! However, I still prefer the feeling of the knitted squares as it's softer.
