Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Vitty!!! 😂

Thank you for the original suggestion though, it's a lovely pattern.

WitchDancer · 24/02/2017 15:44

Malcolm I think those colours are fabulous - I love the slight clashes of colour and can't wait to see the finished article

bookbook · 24/02/2017 17:57

Afternoon!
Those colours look good :)
I was good and only bought 2 balls - another sage, as I really like it, and grape for a change .( really went for some wool to make yet another baby cardigan!)
No knitting done today, am going to do a Candys hug tonight if I get the time

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/02/2017 17:59

Right, the Riotous Rainbow it is!!!

Just getting the smallies fed and put to bed, etc and then I'll get crocheting!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 24/02/2017 20:28

The colours look lovely Malcolm. I have all the Candy's Hugs - I do not need any more yarn. But I love the other colours. My fingers are itching.

Your Marigold is lovely! Vitty It's amazing how different it looks in all the different colours people have chosen isn't it!

Norman. How lovely of you to do a whole blanket, that's so much less work for K&P. I'd love to, but I know my limits. What are you doing?

ThursdayNextIsMyHero · 25/02/2017 06:58

Malcolm that's lovely. I tried a marigold square, but did it all in one colour (partly because I'm running out of wool, and partly because I'm lazy and don't like sewing in lots of peskies). I found it quite tricky, especially when I put it down for a few days and couldn't work out which round I was up to. Mine ended up about 8.5 inches too, so had a couple of rounds of triple to bring it up to size. Haven't taken a photo of that one yet, but have finished some more. They are actually square (or can be pulled to be made square).

Spindelina · 25/02/2017 13:18

Oh no. DD is asleep and it's raining so I can't get out and move the pile of cuttings into the garden waste bin. I'm going to have to knit instead.

Can you feel my pain, people?!?

WitchDancer · 25/02/2017 13:33

Such a hardship!

NormansNipple · 25/02/2017 15:13

Spindelina it's far too wet to be doing gardening jobs. Perfect weather for knitting or crocheting with a Brew and trashy TV of your choice Smile

ChippingIn I'm doing the attic 24 cosy stripe blanket, now that I've learned to crochet in rows i'm finding it very enjoyable! I know I'd really struggle to construct a beautiful blanket from individual squares. The construction teams have such vision when they put them all together. I don't know how they do it. Hats off to them GinFlowers

NormansNipple · 25/02/2017 15:16

Here's my blanket so far. As you can see my progress is being quality checked by a comfy blanket expert.

Apologies for the photo quality, the camera on my phone is a bit pants.

VittysCardigan · 25/02/2017 15:54

Norman - that looks fabulous, going to add that pattern to my to do list!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 25/02/2017 20:30

Norman. It's LOVELY 💐 It looks like QC is very thorough 😂
I just couldn't do rows and rows the same, I am envious of your ability to do that as I love so many of the blankets done in rows.

bookbook · 25/02/2017 21:15

wow Normans - you have miles more patience than I could ever have , and its lovely !
I am just having a break, and then will be casting on for another 12" - mm or maybe crotchet as it grows so quickly......

NormansNipple · 25/02/2017 22:18

Thanks for the kind comments Grin

Vittys I got the kit of all the wool and the paper pattern from wool warehouse, unfortunately you can't get the discount on it, but it's still a good deal. There's a full internet tutorial too if you prefer to follow it that way.

ChippingIn QC does very regular checks and disposes of the cut off peskies by adding them to his little horde of treasures! It's good to do at my craft group and while watching telly as it doesn't require much concentration Grin

bookbook I'm really not that patient! It's good because there are frequent random colour changes. It's 2 rows of straight trebles in one colour, then switch to another colour of 2 rows of granny cluster trebles. It's taking me just under an hour to do a 2 row stripe, it's not too bad. I'm getting envious of everyone else doing lots of exciting squares now though. I have to finish this blanket before I do any more squares - only a few weeks to go to the deadline!

VittysCardigan · 25/02/2017 22:34

Norman I might Oder it after I've finished my Chernobyl squares

VittysCardigan · 25/02/2017 22:34

Order

diamantegal · 25/02/2017 22:45

Norman you've inspired me too! I'd dismissed rows as being too tricky but that looks lovely. Will finish the somewhat pathetic attempt at a 12 inch square in doing and then maybe try rows for my next square.

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/02/2017 23:13

Norman that looks fabulous. I'm doing the same blanket and I think I'm going to stop after 75 colour changes. I'll either use the rest of the wool for Chernobyl squares or if they are on the list then I'll use them for Candy squares.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 25/02/2017 23:35

Bookbook. The rate at which it grows is very addictive isn't it!

Norman. How old is QC? None of my cats have ever been stashers & all but one of them would have been hanging off it hung like that 😁 The other would have been looking at it, then me, then it...as if to say 'How do you expect me to get cosy on it like that you muppet!?' 😂

Vitty one of the woolshops had a special on at £1.39 a ball, it might be cheaper to buy it there?!

WoollyWife. 75 colour changes. FMD. Can we have a photo when you're finished?!

IAmNotAUserNumber · 26/02/2017 09:23

Malcolm great colour combo and order - go for it ]grin]
I love seeing all the colour combinations on here - so many I'd never think of myself but they work so well together. In fact that's part of the fun for me - so far I've been doing knitted stripes and I'm enjoying working out and playing with different colours.
