Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

This is brilliant, I would love to contribute. I can't knit or crochet- but have all the kit. I keep trying to learn and give up. MIL has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I will learn and help.

bookbook · 12/01/2017 23:22

Meh - My DD has just taken up crotchet - she has fallen in love with it - and the tutorial mentioned on here she found very useful - called Bella Coco .
I'm a knitter like Chipping :)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/01/2017 23:32

Meh I'm very sorry to hear about your MIL 💐 If you want any real life help you're probably not far away from another MNer willing to meet up & show you, but some of the online tutorials are great. Some are also very, very crap.

BookBook us 'clickers' need to unite & stay strong! Mind you, now I knit on bamboo needles there's far less clicking...hmm...

bookbook · 12/01/2017 23:37

We do indeed Chipping hmm - not tried bamboo needles , but I've been using the same ones for 40 odd years , so not sure I could cope with the change!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 13/01/2017 07:04

Morning hookers and clickers!

Morning

More wool arrived yesterday, so today I will be making a turquoise and orange creation, I'm also attempting a heart square this weekend too. Had to pause to make a new hat last night as DD lost mine.

I can act as a go between for the clickers and hookers, I love both.

KnottyAndPistey · 13/01/2017 07:54

ThursdayNextIsMyHero - totally up to you my lovely, each square will be warmly received whenever they come. Thank you xx

We are in a wonderful position though with these early arrivals you have been seeing on our Woolly Hugs Facebook page, the first Candy's Hug is under construction! Early stages, but underway! Thanks lovely donors of funds, will be using plum for joining and edging.

Mummylin If it doesn't arrive today, we can send you some, not a problem, the worst that can happen is that two lots arrive. Your Tunnocks wool went in the post 2nd class yesterday, so that is on the way. Let us know about wool for this though. x

Disraeli Behave!!! We totally love and need all squares!

LEM Think I might have one that would suit, tis essentially a variation on a granny, will post a link in a mo. x

So lovely to see wool arriving from donors, how fabulous they are, so on it! Will do thank yous later Thanks

Beautiful squares everyone, happy sigh. Hopefully all PMs have been answered. If you asked for wool it is on the way though, fabulous.

LEM Have a look at this pattern

It is essential a granny square, I'm making a blanket for DD using this in Stylecraft chunky, got 6 colours onto cream.

The tutorial is very clear. Using a 4mm hook and DK it comes out to 6 inches, made a couple that are going into this first blanket.

Morning all. We've woken to about an inch of snow and it's coming down heavily. Husband and son have just gone out and their footprints are already covered. There's a very strong and cold wind too...so what else can I do but knit?

mustbemad71 · 13/01/2017 08:16

KnottyandPistey that is a beautiful granny square, I'm inspired! Will order some Stylecraft today!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 13/01/2017 08:18

Morning Brew

How are the K&P households this morning?

BookBook. Bamboo needles are lovely. I'd never go back. I had to do a small item in a needle size I didn't have in bamboo...it was like driving a Robin Reliant when you're used to a Ferrari! 😁

Glen. I'll bear that in mind in case we need a mediator! 😁 I love the casual way you just stop to make a hat because DD lost yours! I'm not that laid back!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 13/01/2017 08:22

Maddison

No snow here in the central south east. Not yet anyway.

What else could you do...hoover, dust, dishes, laundry, clean the bathroom, clean the windows, sort out a cupboard, mop the floor absolutely nothing I can think of 😁

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 13/01/2017 08:24

Strike out fail 😖 Need more Brew

Pengling · 13/01/2017 08:28

Morning everyone Smile I've done two 12" squares now and started on a third, based on the puff flower pattern kindly provided by the lovely Alice. The pattern itself seems to come out around 4" so now I need to improvise my way up to 12" - it's just a shame that I have to go to work now instead of snuggling up with woolly loveliness...

Happy hooking and clicking today everyone Smile

bookbook · 13/01/2017 08:37

Morning!
well, we have what I would call a proper covering of snow. Not enough to be much of a problem, apart from it being cold work to go and get some veg from our allotment!
Chipping - trouble is , they get 'comfy' in your hands, and also being a tight Yorkshire woman I have every known size to man, plus an extra case full of my DM's as well...... . I know what you mean about the 'casually' re glen. I am knitting all sorts of bits, toddling on , and my DD ( who has taken up crotchet very recently) just pops me 7 hats she has done for the refugee hugs, in the time I have done 2, a pair of mittens, and 2 squares..
Thank you glen - I hereby give you the title of Official Mediator Grin

BigApple11 · 13/01/2017 09:26

Morning woollies, I have just finished these for starters....Going to choose a different pattern next as Ive just measured these and they may be are slightly over 6ins Blush

MrsHathaway · 13/01/2017 09:32

When I knit (which is increasingly rare now) I use bamboo: my mother gave me a full set from 2mm-6mm so am spoilt for choice.

Have to hide them, though, as the DC think they're excellent weapons!

VittysCardigan · 13/01/2017 09:36

Going to try that pattern later KnottyAndPistey thank you for the link

VittysCardigan · 13/01/2017 09:37

I'm loving all the pictures of all the fabulous squares SmileSmile

kelper · 13/01/2017 09:42

I love that pattern Knotty I might give it a go today, once I've mucked out DS's bedroom 😱
It snowed on the way to school this morning, not a lot mind, but I'm very glad I'm not a teacher, the kids were all going crazy!!
Its now trying to snow again, DDog and I are not going out ;)

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 13/01/2017 09:53

Fingers crossed for yarn delivery today Mummylin
I'm trying not to worry buy can't switch off stupid anxiety.

We had a little snow last night so I'm concentrating on the joy of being able to use a shimmering white yarn (JCB Twinkle) in my temperature blanket.❄

Mummylin · 13/01/2017 10:01

Fingers crossed that something will arrive today !!! Normally our delivery service is quite good.

dodobedoop · 13/01/2017 10:19

Morning. I've got wool, am going to attempt a crochet square in the pattern that knotty linked. It's a looong time since I did any crocheting, I'll definitely need to have a peep at the tutorial!

kelper · 13/01/2017 10:56

Zing What is a temperature blanket, if you don't mind me asking?
