Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Thank you to my wonderful donor - Boysenberry and Fuschia Purple have just arrived! I'll make some really lovely squares from both of us Flowers

DollyPlastic · 07/01/2017 12:18

You lot are fucking amazing.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/01/2017 12:19

I placed an order with Wool Warehouse at 1.45 yesterday - and it arrived shortly after 11am today. So I will have lots of yarn to play with, this afternoon (after we have done the big food shop).

I might do a couple of african flower crochet squares - if they come up the right size.

Tamsworth17 · 07/01/2017 12:43

I´m jealous that your deliveries have arrived - hurry up post!

In the meantime Im practising and need help please - my first rows are very loose <img loading="lazy" class="inline-flex mumsnet-emoji" alt="Wink" src="https://www.mumsnet.com/build/assets/wink-ClU7UaDM.png"> - with big loops - how do I make them tighter and neater? (pelvic floor exercises and reading a book on Victorian morality aren´t helping). Whats the secret to neat first rows?

Oh!!! What an adorable little kitty! Grin

Forgot to say earlier that I really LOVE the colours that I've received - living in a house with a husband and two sons it's lovely to see some bright and feminine shades around here Wink I always thoroughly enjoy knitting with these kind of colours.

HemanOrSheRa · 07/01/2017 13:34

Eek! What a gorgeous face. Looks a bit naughty though Smile. Delicious toe beans and a fuzzy, wuzzy, spotty belly too!

JulesJules · 07/01/2017 14:12

Oh look at the little spotty tummy. Adorable Star

KnottyAndPistey · 07/01/2017 14:46

More wonderful donors of funds to thank, you are so fabulous, our aim has always been to be inclusive and we know costs would be prohibitive for some without help. Tis team work at its finest. Bless you for it. Your crafters will make something beautiful from you both. Thank you. X

Oh my knotty so gorgeous.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 07/01/2017 15:25

I have to admit that I've been rather lax with recent Woolly Hug donations.
This thread and it's link to Zombie has given me my woolly mojo back and I'm crocheting with a vengeance!!!

To all of you who worry about wonky lines and lack of artistry - please don't.. The ladies of woolly hugs can work miracles with all offerings so just pick up your wool and start creating!!

I'm attaching a picture of my 12" c2c square and a 6" bobble square - please notice the "iffy" edge on the right. Woolly hugs will manage it though.

Count me in!

I am in York if anyone wants to learn how to crochet a basic granny square, I would happily help.

Chippednailvarnishing · 07/01/2017 15:30

PUG I always think I will crochet my squares and then chicken out and knit them. Would you consider videoing you crocheting a square and posting it. I'm clearly thick, but crochet pattens are beyond me!

bookbook · 07/01/2017 15:33

Afternoon!
I have just got home - and here is what has arrived today from the incredibly generous MrsMozart .
wowsers - I can get knitting tonight! Grin

SpiralArchitect · 07/01/2017 15:45

Squeeeeee!!! Kitten pics!

Gorgeous kitty, Knots...I'm getting kitten-broody now, but I think the SpiralCats would object to any new arrivals in the strongest possible terms.

I have started hooking a riotously vibrant 12" square, plenty more to come...

SickTiredDesperate · 07/01/2017 15:46

I'm sorry as haven't RTFT (& this may already have been answered so apologies) as slightly wiped ATM but did read the OP and would love to help?

Only way I can help ATM is via donating (or buying wool online to be directly delivered to whichever clever person is knitting!) so can someone please tell me how I can do that?

And thank you all, you along with so many other MN'ers genuinely restore one's faith in human natureFlowers

NannyR · 07/01/2017 15:50

I've just ordered some yarn from wool warehouse to make some squares. If it's any use to anyone I found a voucher code SC23 that gives 10% off all orders. Looking forward to getting started!

TheoriginalLEM · 07/01/2017 15:51

Still waiting for mine - I ordered from love knitting.com hopefully they will come soon.

RaspberryOverloadTheFirst · 07/01/2017 16:20

Please count me in. I'm not the fastest by any means, but I'll get some wool and have a go. Crochet, as I can't knit.

Vibrant Riot sounds good to me Grin

Iwantacampervan · 07/01/2017 16:28

My Wool Warehouse order has arrived - lovely colours. The balls of wool came in a fabric bag too (nice touch). Will get started asap but unfortunately I'm going out this evening.

fruitbats · 07/01/2017 16:35

SickTired if you pm the OP they will assist in matching you with a knitter/crocheter or give you details to donate

PUGaLUGS · 07/01/2017 16:39

Chipped I would be rubbish at videoing Grin but tutorial is very helpful - it's how I got to crochet. Honestly it's the easiest thing in the world to follow.

PUGaLUGS · 07/01/2017 16:39

Chippednailvarnishing · 07/01/2017 16:43

Eyes PUG suspiciously Grin
I'll try this, but I might drop knotty a line to warn her that she will be receiving some wooly thimbles!
