As for so many others, we have been moved to tears by the heartbreaking plight of refugees, both in Europe and further afield, and the inhumanity which seems to surround them too often. We have donated, signed petitions on change.org and written to our MPs, and understand the feeling of shouting in the wind, we desperately want to do more.

There is something practical we can do together, and it really will help, but fabulous Mumsnetters, we are going to need your support.

We can get woolly warmth to families in refugee camps in Kurdistan, thanks to the amazing charity Knit for Peace. There are 1.8 million refugees trapped there, most have fled civil wars and ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Winter is coming, it will be even more desperate and absolutely freezing. We are also developing links to get resources to children and families elsewhere, and on their arrival in the UK. We just want to help keep folk warm. We know we can’t help everyone, but we can some.

We really need your help, here’s how…

  • We need 12 inch, or six inch squares. Knit or crochet both equally welcome.
  • Yarn to be used - any good quality acrylic DK, for example Stylecraft special DK
  • Any colour, any style, it is all good.
  • Squares equally welcome if made by beginner or expert. Truly.
  • No one think their's wouldn’t be good enough. They will be.
  • We'd love to receive whole blankets, but absolutely understand time constraints.
  • We’d also love to receive hats and gloves/mittens for any age, baby sized through to adult, the same for jumpers. But appreciate that is a very big ask.
  • If you’d like to donate yarn or funds, let us know - we’d absolutely LOVE to hear from you, we need you too. This will be a real team effort
  • If anyone would like to join in crafting but can’t afford to, please PM us, we can help.

One square, one blanket, a pair of gloves, one warm hat, one step at a time, really every little thing will help. Together we can make a difference.

Thanks

Sadly we cannot accept items other than home made woolly ones at the moment, if this changes we will come back.

If anyone arrives in this thread and holds similar views to Cameron, no need to post, just move along. This is a positive, humanitarian thread taking positive, humanitarian action.

Thank you doesn’t come close, bless you. Thanks

Hmmm am in two minds whether to rush to weave in the ends of the 7 squares I've done and get them in the post today, or wait and send them in Jan with a bunch more .... they are all variations on the same theme, so might work better if I send them all together?

KnottyAndPistey · 13/11/2015 10:23

No need to wait until January - the sooner we get squares, the sooner we can get them turned into blankets and on their way, so maybe don't rush. but send in the next week or so?

Thank you Thanks

I think that answers my question too!

Iwasworried · 13/11/2015 11:00

Okey doke, thank you, will see how I get on - waiting for a wool order to arrive from Wool Warehouse! Mine are the double-stranded two-tone squares btw. I sent a few in yellow and have now done more in yellow and in pink. Going to do some greens, blues and purples so they make a nice set.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2015 14:06

you need to glare over your glasses at me...

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2015 15:04

right, it is taped up and ready to go to the post office. eek. will see if the post office at the convenience store is open later if not we will go tomorrow to post it.

PeaceOfWildThings · 13/11/2015 15:17

Am half way around the border... Might be ready for posting tomorrow!

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2015 15:23

yay keep going peace. that is lots of progress.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2015 15:24

I have already generated a lot of pesky ends which i need to start sorting out as I go.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 13/11/2015 17:23

So many wonderful things, wow! It's so nice to be part of such a worthy effort :-)

I'm going to have to take a break until mid January, so many things to finish off plus we are moving out for 2 weeks in Jan to start very first phase of building work (eek!)

Would someone please PM me when the next deadline after the 8th Jan is decided so I can start contributing again. I'd very much appreciate a reminder, brain's a sieve!

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2015 17:42

it is in the post.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2015 20:24

I suspect it will get sent with tomorrow's post as I went into the post office at 4.45. I am looking forward to seeing that it has arrived safely.

PeaceOfWildThings · 14/11/2015 14:03

Finally got the last pesky end sewn in, but missed posting it today.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/11/2015 21:53

Been sewing in peskies on the squares that I have started. Wondering what dimensions to make this blanket. I suppose it depends on how many squares I get made and when I run out of yarn!

KnottyAndPistey · 15/11/2015 09:43

Morning, am just coming to yesterdays post, huge pile here! Brew

Thank you Thanks

Such good news, the first shipment from Knit for Peace is being distributed in Kurdistan, our earliest deliveries will be in here we are pretty sure. Pics courtesy of KforP and Goods for Good.

Next last posting date is January 8th, but obviously the sooner we get your treasure, the sooner it can get on its way. They are keeping going, so we are keen to push on too. One square, one blanket, a pair of gloves, one warm hat, one step at a time, really every little thing will help. Together we can make a difference.

Can't quite take this in, such a fabulous response

Heart felt thanks from us Star Thanks

Terrific! :-)

TheFairyCaravan · 15/11/2015 18:31

I'm glad they got there. I've not used Hermes before so was a little twitchy and tracking them every 2 minutes!

BlackeyedSusan · 16/11/2015 07:37

thing is I could be waiting until Wednesday given the speed of the postal service.

KnottyAndPistey · 16/11/2015 07:41

Think MyHermes have really upped their game. Love that you get notifications, and can track. Plus the price. Think when they first started it was all rather chaotic. Seems good now.

Susan, have a long day out today, so unless they catch my neighbour the earliest will be tomorrow. So breeeeeathe! X
