Desperately sad and shocking news we’re afraid. The very lovely BerryLellow has died suddenly and unexpectedly. Just devastating for her beautiful boys, family and friends. So hard to find the words Sad

Many of us met Berry at Mumsnet meets, she was a right hoot with a heart of gold and she loved to dance the night away. A condolence thread started by a good friend of hers from their September '09 ante/post natal group is here if you would like to add a message.

We have spoken with Berry’s family and have decided to make both her boys a single bed sized Woolly Hug full of love and memories of their fabulous mum. We hope their blankets may give whatever comfort they can to them. Joining with us in making the blankets will be members of Berry’s family and folk from her village in Cornwall which is rather lovely.

Can you help us in any way?

We shall need crocheters, knitters and donors. If you would like to donate wool or funds, I can match you up. If you would like to join in but need donated wool, I can help there too.
Please PM me with your offers of help ( RatherBeOnThePiste) THANK YOU SO MUCH.

The Yarn we are Using….

  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK
  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (discontinued but some still around)
  • Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
  • Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
  • James C. Brett Pure Merino DK (also discontinued, some still to be had)
  • Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear.

Colour wise, we are thinking brights
Berry loved blues - teals and turquoise.
Bright grassy greens This or similar, lime greens too.
Oranges - but from these please - Debbie Bliss Rialto DK 56 (tangerine) Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK - Pumpkin (373) or Debbie Bliss Rialto DK burnt orange (043)
Stone - but from these please Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK WM9 Beige, Debbie Bliss Rialto DK 06 Stone, James C. Brett Pure Merino DK 17 Beige

    Ideas for squares
Berry loved Cornwall and the beach, spending many hours there with her boys.
She loved camper vans and Ikea!
They had long chats in their post natal group about decorating, she loved tangerine and chartreuse - they had to look chartreuse up!
Her Pinterest boards would be great to look at and a real source of inspiration. She shared them on MN a lot too. See here
We are thinking berries for Berry
We have initials/letters to do too - do PM if this might be you.

Reading this and looking at Pinterest will give lots of ideas but please don't feel daunted we truly love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and play a vital role in the overall effect. Knotty (KnottyLocks ) will help with any crafting queries. Squares to be 6 inches, using 4mm hook or needles. All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert are equally welcomed. It really is the love and thought that counts. Please do PM Knotty if you need help.

Do use the crafting guide on the website to help you with lots of practical info such as help with buying colours, recommended online retailers and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for patterns.

Previous blankets can be seen on the Woolly Hugs website and we are on Facebook and Twitter at MNWoollyHugs/@MNWoollyHugs which are both good ways to keep in touch.

When finished please sew in those ends but don’t block your work. Then PM me (RatherBeOnThePiste) for details for posting.

As always heartfelt thanks for your support

Thinking of Berry, her beautiful boys and all those who love and miss her.

    Pistey and Knotty Thanks

Weird innit, how it can vary? Confused

Jacksmania · 12/06/2014 14:37

Ok, my Big Plan For The Weekend is to finish some flowers for another project, and then start Berry's square.

I have a request: could I be sent a tiny little bit of brown yarn? I have no brown. I don't know why. But I have in my mind a square with mid- and brighter blues for water, a tangerine sun, and a bit of beach with a palm tree. (Do they have palms in Cornwall?) It wouldn't need very much - just a tiny bit of a sandy brown, for the beach, and some medium brown, for the palm trunk. It could probably go in a plain paper envelope if you unravel it and squash it flat, it really only needs a little.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 12/06/2014 16:03

They do have palms in Cornwall! :D

ScienceRocks · 12/06/2014 20:45

Oh my word, you're getting woolly treasure already? When is final posting?

Tarlia · 12/06/2014 21:12

I'll hold off starting then. Thank you.

Those squares sound lovely and so speedy. How quickly are these hugs made? This is my first, other than Chernobyl.

Jacksmania · 12/06/2014 21:25

Really?? Who knew.
Well, YeGods did Grin.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 12/06/2014 22:25

Well they looked a bit like palm trees. Small ones. Abit wind blown.

Mckayz · 14/06/2014 08:27

Morning,

is there a date we need to post by? My moss stitch square was a disaster so I've had to start a new square. Sad

Allalonenow · 14/06/2014 08:48

My gorgeous orange wool arrived yesterday, thank you very much.

Brew and Cake to see you through interwebby probs Pistey

droitwichmummy · 14/06/2014 08:54

I'm late to this one! Marking my place and will be back later

droitwichmummy · 14/06/2014 15:31

Have caught up with the thread. Pistey and Knotty would you like some berries for Berry? I also have plenty of wool here so will not need a donor this time. Is the orange you sent me recently ok for this one?

Allalonenow · 15/06/2014 01:30

Mckayz
I don't think a final posting posting date has been set yet.
Moss stitch can have a mind of its own and morph into lumpy rib sometimes Smile

TenMinutesToLanding · 15/06/2014 09:41

Glad the deadline isn't yet as my 6" incher has morphed into something else completely and will have to be frogged, bloody thing.

Think I got a bit Slack Alice with my hooking. No offence to Alice's out there.

Grin

MySpideySenseTickles · 15/06/2014 10:11

I did two squares last night, got plans for some more but at 01:30 I measured the square I had just finished and it was six inches perfectly, looked at it this morning next to the other one and measured it again it's barely five inches. [cry] I'm going to have to figure out where to squeeze in an inch lol

Mckayz · 15/06/2014 14:12

That's all right then! I'm going to stick to plain squares for now and practice more difficult ones with spare wool.

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2014 14:50

Droitwich, berries in orange would be fabulous. Thank you.

MySpidey, we can always add an edge at our end if that helps.

MySpideySenseTickles · 15/06/2014 18:41

I've already got a plan, just annoying.
(It's CakeyCakeyCakey on a namechange btw) didn't want toess up your numbers.

Trumpton · 15/06/2014 18:48

I sent a PM to ask if a Chough bird would be ok as I think i could do one but it is black birdHere I could do it on a cream background. Please tell me what you think . I do not mind what I knit.

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2014 22:50

Oh Chuff! I completely forgot the chough! Sorry , our Bodkin

Right, just thunking on the colours...back very shortly.

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2014 22:57

Have thunk and returned your PM xxx

Kveta · 16/06/2014 12:51

have just seen the preview for Simply Crochet's next issue (which is out next week I think) - patterns for sea shells and beach huts apparently! (plus a bikini pattern, but let's not talk about that concept...)
